help...leak at cv shaft
I have an 03 MCS
I have discovered a leak around the CV shaft seal at the transmission, it appears to be a clear fluid with a brownish tint. I put the car on ramps with the engine running I dried the area with a towel and I can see it seep around the seal area and drip
Is this tranny fluid? I would expect something different on a manual gearbox. Is this a seal that can be replaced or is this a bigger issue?

Really? all that I have been able to find on the forums seems to say that the manual gearbox uses ATF fluid, I am used to ATF being reddish in color. thats part of my confusion on this...so the 6 speed getrag is filled with a clear brownish tint tranny fluid? can anyone else confirm this please?
so is this a minor issue or a major one?

stick or auto?
5/6 speeds run gear oil. CVTs run a trans fluid.
but the leak needs to be fixed. a seal there should be easy, but it may be a shaft problem. how many miles? maybe a good time for a trans flush.

That oil was made for the Landrover Disco manual gear box. The only place its found in the US is in the Mini dealer. Most of the people here switch to Redline or other aftermarket brands with good results. As for calling it gear oil its synectic so it pours like ATF but thats it, it is by no means a ATF- its not like your dads 80-90 dino oil As for the seal sorry I have not info on that.

yeah you can get to the seal without pulling the trans. you will have to remove the shaft to get to it. i would get a seal and a new nut and some fluid. i would also have someone do it that knows what they are doing, or get a bentley manual to wake you through most of it.
