No limiter or electronic device and stop you mechanically linking the car at a high road speed to a high gear speed. Once you let that clutch down, the engine will try to match the wheel speed and will just keep reeving until it can't anymore. The fuel or spark cuts have nothing to do with the forces at work.

Sorry for your loss, if your dealer does not pick up the damage (and i don't see why they would) your insurance will.

It all depends on how much you B*tch and how high up the food chain you go. Just realize that once you start to B*tch don't expect much favors or help again....

This should come as not surprise to anyone. The R56 has a Peugeot engine, after all.

I've watched a Subaru tech pull a flat six motor in 45 minutes. The MINI is a bit more complicated due to compact packaging, but I'd guess 3 days is for the inevitable snafus that come up.

RMFD come from places that specialized in RMFD parts, usually this is normal when you get a rebate for core part. Like a Master cylinder or alternator, calipers ect.

I had a friend got his ITR motor changed at 60,000 km for buring oil. Last year of honda factory B18c5 short blocks, lucky him.
So explain why thats on the paperwork (RMFD) if dealers are not installing them.

I have one installed... you think it's a typo? Maybe that all the computer had been set up for is RMFD and they couldn't change the printout...and I really have a factory new.

You want the dealership to PAY for this? You mis-shifted and over-revved the car! No manual trans car will stop you from doing this. I agree with the poster above -- call your insurance company. Otherwise, please don't threaten the dealership with a lawsuit. This is your mistake, and has nothing to do with warranty service, any more than it would if you drove your car into a tree.

(Sorry to be harsh, but this is the way I see it.)

i think they're going to replace the car though for us, so we dont have to go through the lemon law crap

2nd one was similar but an Automatic engine. Broke the head off a valve on the #2 exh and shot a hole thru the top of the piston. Needless to say, done. These Eng do not come apart on the bottom end easily at all..
I've seen the oil pan bent trying to remove it. No rebuilding.
Ouch!

Thanks for the reply Healey.

And for those mis-shifting...
If you hit a kerb and trashed a wheel and suspension, would you complain to the dealer? Sorry, but that seems a bit unfair on the dealer.

a lot of parts from the dealership are re manufactured. If its warranty work, chances are it'll be a Reman part. Warranty still covers it. When we replace engines at the customers nickle they have a choice of NIB or Reman. This is BMW and MINI!

So which is better NIB or RMFD?

I'd be happy that the dealer plans to replace the engine, rather than rebuild it.

Well, since it's going to be on the OP's nickel (or his insurance co's nickel) I'd opt for the new one, especially on a 5k mile car.

Gotta watch those downshifts.........

Personally I don't understand how someone can miss a shift and not know it when they start to let out the clutch. All you have to do is push the clutch in again, put it in the right gear and no harm/no foul.....but I know other's have done this........my nephew for example, used to catch first when he was going for third.........had to spend a little time with him training.........

I'm not saying you can't miss a shift once in a while, I've done it too, but I always know because of the way the car reacts when I start to let out the clutch and just re-clutch and get the right gear......

ouch.. so what is the price since you are definiately going to have to pay for this one. There's not a snowball's chance in **** of this being covered under warranty.

I was telling my bf the other night (after he got 4th going for 2nd) that I've never mis-shifted in Lewis. And I just learned a manual before I got him. There have been a few times that I went for 5th and didn't get it quite all the way engaged - but just put the clutch back in when I heard and felt the grinding.

I can see how you got 2 and 4 mixed up, the MINI shifter is far from precise.

My old '88 Mustang GT has better shift control, and back in the day when '88 was new, the magazine reviews hated its shifter

I thought R53 and R56 had rev limiters ? I could swear i read that somewhere.

I don't have that much experience driving a manual, but I've found the shift gate to be pretty crisp.

There are rev limiters, but they only work on the way up. Nothing can stop the clutch from trying to engage when the engine revs are too high.

Some cars lock out the lower gears based on speed.... Saabs for example, Audi's too I believe. Most, if not all, manual transmissions lock out reverse with any forward motion. But this is a mechanical function in the shift mechanism and has nothing to do with the engine.
