Run Flats or Regular Tires?
Run Flats or Regular Tires?
I have 16" Goodyear runflats on my '05 MCC that are near replacement and since I've never used runflats before or strictly summer tires I was thinking of going to regular all season tires--cheaper and smoother riding. As a new owner, I'd appreciate others experience with type and brand. I'm sure there have been many tire posts in the past but I haven't run across them. Thanks
Lots of discussion on this. Check out the wheel and tire forum.
But the short answer is that LOTS of us just get regular tires and add a compressor and a can of fix-a-flat to our tool kit (or get a donut spare tire)

Thanks for the responses--I found the tire and wheel forum and it's very helpful. I drive around town and will buy the regulars and keep my AAA card handy. I have an '05 MCC.

Thanks, my MCC has a factory temp spare and a AAA card in the glovebox. I'm leaning toward the Michelin Pilot Primacy RF's at Costco for $150 each installed and out the door with road hazard. I have Michelins on all my other vehicles so I figure why experiment and probably be disappointed. The same tire is more expensive at Tirerack when you add road hazard, shipping and install charges. The less expensive non RF's I looked at on Tirerack all had spotty reviews for my size. When it snows or freezes here in Virginia I'll be in my Jeep so no issue with the Michelin summer tread.
Hey dbsandord,
I went the costco route w/16" Michelin Pilot Exalto M&S non-runflats a couple years ago and I think there's a remarkable ride and handling improvement over the OEM Dunlop runflats. I also found Costco to be a better deal than Tirerack, plus the obvious local benefits.

Limited choices--True. I lucked out because Costco actually had the exact tires that Tirerack recommended. Not to take away from Tirerack, though, as I continue to buy wheels and performance tires from them.
I ran run-flats for 4 years, taking up 2 sets. The first at 20,000 miles with some solo and track. The second set went 25,000 miles with no solo or track. I bought a set of Khumos non run-flats from Jet Racing on Ebay with rims mounted and balanced for $700 and used them for comp and track. Helped increase mileage for run-flat. I now run Khumo ASP all weather high performance non-runflat which I got from same for $700 ( this is with shipping included.) I now have 5000 miles and they still look as new. Measured showing they may last 50,000 +. The run-flats have a tread wear of 280 the Khumos have a wear of 380.
I'm with Jag. I put Khumos on my 05 "S" got rid of the over priced run flats and horrible ride. I purchased the spare from Minimania the rest is history. You lose trunk space (not that you had much to begin). Fasten the spare in the trunk if you need grocery space fold the seats down.
I ended up going with Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 in 205/55/16--up one size from stock--from a private tire dealer. They are smooth riding but still feel pretty stiff and retain the same handling characteristics as the original GY RF's. Just curious, what size Khumo's did you guys go with? Thanks.
It is,
but sometimes it needs corrective lenses too! The 205-45 combo has about 7% more sidewall than the 215-40, so it's a bit better on pot holes. There's always some trade off. You can fit 215-45s as well, and that gets the width of the 215 and a bit more sidewall than a 205-45, but it's a bit taller a combo as wel....
Just stuff to think about.
