Is there an indicator to show when DSC is turned off? I don't see any light and nothing displays in the tach's LCD like it does when you hit the sport button.
Oddly enough, I do have an icon that pops up when the DSC is turned off, but nothing when the 'Sport' button is activated other than the light on the button itself.

The sport button graphic in the tach only appeared in late 2007 build MINIs, I believe around week 31 or 32 forward. It came along with the cruise control speed in the tach, new door sills, 'gong' sound and TPMS.
If you have all of those except for the sport button graphic then something may be amiss. But if you have none it's totally normal.
I'll try holding the button for a few seconds and see if I can locate that dash light. I have just be pressing it momentarily so it probably hasn't ever turned on the dash light.
I get a yellow triangle in the tach face (about 10 o'clock position) when DSC is off. Gotta hold the DSC button for a couple of seconds before it disengages, but a quick push turns it back on.
Just checked, and there is the yellow indicator at the 10 o'clock position, also a large one in the upper LCD display of the tach (which disappears after a few seconds), and on the Nav screen status bar is also says DSC inactive. Sweet!
