Floppy Accelerator Pedal
Floppy Accelerator Pedal
Driving (gently) this weekend and I suddenly felt like something had rolled up under my accelerator pedal and was blocking it from going down.
Upon further inspection, it looks like the point where the pedal hinges to the base has completely broken loose. Now the pedal flops left - right, and moves up - down, in addition to pushing in - out as it should. This makes it very difficult for me to get the pedal in just the right spot to give it gas, and makes shifting a pain in the boot.
MINI of Sterling says the replacement part for the pedal is $130+, and the base is $10. It is not obvious to me which needs to be fixed, but I think it's the pedal - THAT WOULD FIGURE.
I did my due diligence and searched NAM for any similar issues, and found none, so I am asking here:
1) Is this a simple enough deal that I could do this myself with the appropriate replacement parts? I am a novice, but I have access to a pro for "tech support" if needed.
2) WTF? I don't go bashing the pedals, so I don't get it. No track time - nothing - just NOVA Traffic every day.
Thanks for your help!

The hinge at the bottom of the accelerator pedal where the pedal itself pivots on is nothing more than a thin section of plastic as part of the overall molded part. The thin area allows the pedal to move as the plastic flexes. Depending on how hard you press the pedal and especially if you press from the lower portion, the plastic hinge could break. Unfortunately, the pedal comes as an assembly along with the electronic input sensor, making it more expensive to replace.
It's not a big deal to replace (a couple of screws get removed and the pedal slides to the right off the base, and a single electrical connector attaches underneath), disconnect the battery prior to doing the job.
While yours is only the second instance of the pedal hinge failing that I have heard of, I am suprised it hasnt happened more often. It's not exactly the most durable or elegant solution for a hinge. It's the same thing found on cheap plastic carry cases.

My accelerator pedal started to crack a month ago, so I applied some duct tape to it keeping it from moving around. Well yesterday it finally gave in...totally cracked all the way through. Called the dealer today and yep $150 or so...Bummer!
Daddy Duper - did you replace it yourself?
