Clutch problem: vibration/whirring when pedal is depressed?

Well on my new to me 02 Cooper, 5 speed, 12k miles, I noticed a very strange whirring noise when the clutch is depressed. With the hood up it seems to be coming from behind the engine. My father thought it sounded like a whoosing noise. I am thinking it is either the slave or the release/throw out bearing. The dealership suggested the slave based on those symptoms.

Also, when you are pressing the pedal you can feel a vibration through your foot, almost feels like grinding. You don't even need to start depressing the clutch pedal, just some pressure on it and you can feel it. Any ideas?

Thanks

i dont know the intricacies(sp) of the cooper transmission but from experience on other cars may be a throw out bearing.

My cooper s had the throw out bearing and the slave cylinder both fail. If it is begining then take it to the dealer IMMEDIATELY. I waited and 3 DAYS after I noticed this my car was undrivable. I had to trailer my car from Defiance, Ohio to Columbus, a 2 1/2 hour drive! These two parts cost under $200.00, but installation kills you. But if you wait you risk footing a big bill. The dealer charged me, NOT UNDER WARRANTY(some dealers suck), $1,200.00 and that is half the cost, the dealer picked up the other half.

Oh, the dealer had to replace my slave cylinder, throw out bearing, clutch disk, pressure plate, and input shaft.

I had the same problem exactly.. once i finish the installation of the clutch kit and the slave cylinder.. i notice that there is a "gshshsh" sound once i shift from my 1gear to the 2gear :S

I toke it back to the garage.. they told me its the syncro's are gone.. i toke it to the other garage. he said you have to replace your transmission.

anyone with the same problem ?

I think that the determining factor is does the whoosh or what ever happening when the clutch pedal is down and held....if so, it would indicate throw out bearing problem. If the noise only happens while the clutch is *being* pressed, then I would look harder at the slave cylinder.

Yep I am pretty sure its a throwout bearing in my case. It hasn't gotten too loud yet, but I am not driving the car regularly anymore either. I really need to get it fixed.
