Check Engine and Bad Mileage
Check Engine and Bad Mileage
EDIT: PLEASE MOVE THIS TO 1ST GENERATION FORUM
My check engine light came on about a week ago, after I finished taking apart the stereo (which is also broken, different story for a different time), and I took it in to get the P Codes. The guy at Auto Zone told me it was an O2 sensor circuit failure, and asked if I had bad mileage. I didn't, but after the CEL reset itself, I noticed I was burning gas quicker than normal; 24 mpg as opposed to the normal 27-30. Anyway, the CEL came on again last night, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, on the cheap.
Thanks,
Sylens

Gas cap is the first thing to check, if it isn't seated, you'll get CEL. Even after seating it, it'll take 3-4 starts befpre CEL will clear. Not sure about low mileage though, that sounds like it could actually be a bad O2 sensor. (But don't trust me on that one...)
Yeah, i always thought bad mileage implies a bad primary O2 sensor. If your out of warenty (emmisions things are strange with warenties) you could try doing that one yourself it should be to get to. Id ask the dealer if you are covered and how much it costs first.
