Steering rack

A week or two After driving thru water deeper than I would like, my boots filled with P S fluid.

Had a local shop inspect it. Their verdict, rust on the shaft had destroyed the inner seals.

Rather than pay Mini $900 to replace the power steering rack with a stock unit, the shop removed the rack and sent it off to Chicago If I remember correctly.
The place they sent it to hard chromed the shaft, remachined it. installed new seals, and returned it to local shop. It only took a week using overnight shipping. It has been fine ever since. Doing this was not much more money than what the dealer wanted.
I got rained on last week and now the power windows stopped working. LOL!

I will look to see if I have any info on the facility that did the rebuild....

Ann

yep that's it.thanks Ann.you know,i to drove thrue water.yes a little deep.but i dought that is the exact cause.it was probabily corroding before the seal was installed.another design flaw.oh,how maney miles do you have on it when the rack started leaking .the dealer would not tell me what he could do for me untill they inspected it(to make sure that i didn't do anything to it and make sure it was in for regular service bla bla bla) and that i pay a 125.00 inspection fee.can't say i felt very trusting after my conversation with him.i wonder if your conversation the same mine did(with the dealer)thanks again. Mike
