Drive axle seal

I need advice re: replacing both drive axle seals (the transmission output shaft seals as the mechanic referred to them). I don't do my own MINI mechanical work but I do check out everything that happens. I've read my Bentley and the few threads here that pertain to the problem.

MC JoeGreen turned 100K YESTERDAY. DOB 01-10-2003. The leak spots on the garage pad started 3 days ago. Transmission fluid; worse on the right but apparently leaking on both sides. Local mechanic - who is good - says 3 hours and $300+ charge.

Questions: Is this a common problem due to high mileage?
What is the likely cause? Alignment? Torque? Age? Bad roads?
While they're in there what else should be checked?
Both seals at the same time? Why?
What to look for after the repair?

JoeGreen has been everywhere but even so I haven't abused him and plan on keeping up with him until .... Thanks. LN

sounds like u got an old mini there just fix it as it comes. that seal most likely are just leaking from wear. they are a rubber seal that goes around the cv shaft and rubs on it. so after awhile they just wear down and start leaking

Thanks for your response. JoeG is at the shop as we speak. I assumed wear at his age and mileage but I'm always looking for the hidden problems as he has had a few atypical things go wrong. I'll know more later today about his current health ... Motor on!
