Slight Knocking in the Boot

Good day,

I've had my MINI since Mid-April, and I love everything about it. Just today, the check engine light came on and we will take it in on Friday morning. I know it's gonna be no big deal. (KNOCK ON WOOD). However, it got me thinking about the slight knocking that I hear occasionally near the boot. I had always thought that it was the speakers thumping but now I am not so sure. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be? Thanks for your time.

Pete

The sound coming from the trunk is the strings that raise the cover up when you open the trunk. When you close it, there is a weight at the end of the string that holds it down..They kinda bump the sides every now and then... Sorry for the highly technical explanation... Don't know if it's your problem but if you don't get the gas cap tight it can make the check engine light come on...

minimarks,

I appreciate your reply. Unfortunately, I removed the cover for the truck so I doubt that is it. It happens when the engine is off too. I'll have the SA take a gander.

Also, it's not the "check engine" light per say, it's the symbol with the outline of an engine that appears on the tach and also on the speedo.

I was having a rattle in the boot of my car as well and think I found the problem last night.

I pulled out the rubber at the top of the boot that holds in the roof liner and found a metal plate that is supposed to be glued to the liner has come un-stuck. This metal plate hold the liner to the roof using a clip, but if it comes unglued the plate will just flop around and make a ton of noise.

If you pull down the liner just a little bit, you will be able to tell if this is the problem. The plate is dead center.
