Harsh metal noise?

Whenever the MINI has set for a while, and I try to pull out from a dead stop. i sometimes hear a very loud moaning sound which sounds like metal rubbing on metal. I've noticed that I can't get it to make the noise after the car has ran for a bit. It kinda sounds like a sound an elephant would make, lol. I had a neon that made a similar noise when i would turn the steering wheel, but that was due to low power steering fluid leak in the steering rack. This noise happens on the mini without needing to touch the wheel. just an easy pulling out will make it do it. The noise only lasts for a second, and I can drag it out by accelerating even slower. Has anyone came across this problem or have a guess what it might be?

Im going in for service thursday, but i fear that i will not be able to replicate the noise while at the dealer.

I have the same noise on my 04 MCS with 53K. I believe it has something to do with the flywheel..... On top fo that I've got a sticky/squeaky clutch pedal and according to the dealer will need to drop the tranny to replace the bushings that are causing the squeakiness.....

If you are under warranty try to leave the car overnight. I tried but they couldn't reproduce the problem...of course.

I have all these symptoms as well but because they can't reproduce the noise snyper described, they won't touch it.

Get the service manager involved if that does not work insist on a meeting with the Regional rep. from Mini (BMW).

Most likely the clutch. Mine chatters pretty badly when it's the first clutch engagement of the day. Many MINI's have the same problem. If you catch it under warranty it'll get replaced. Mine's been like this for the past 20,000 miles. Problem doesn't appear to affect performance or longevity of the clutch which now has over 50,000 miles on it.
