Sun Shade Issue?
Since I've had it (37 days), my rear sunshade will open about 3 inches at various times, especially when I pop the sunroof for ventilation after parking. Figure it's a Murphy's law, trying to fix it will only make things worse i.e. the headliner won't fit properly anymore, etc.
I also would like to know if others have gotten it fixed....

The front sunshade opens about 2 inches and stops. The back doesn't seem to have a problem, yet. Had my MINI since 4/26. Haven't had a chance to get the dealer to look at the problem yet because they are over 80 miles away.
FWIW I've noticed that the problem is worse in hot weather. When the temp is cooler the shade stays put. When it's hot it rolls back. Had the sunroof tinted today and it made a major difference. Cut interior termperature a lot and the shade behaved for the most part.
I asked MINI to fix the sunshade when car was in this week to repair shipping damage to wheel well trim. They re-torqued the tension on the shade and now it does not slide open all the time BUT it also never completely CLOSES. Not GREAT DESIGN or a great repair job.
Until they come up with a real FIX , I have devised a work around fix. Not exactly elegant , but it seems to work.(pics attached) I attached some hard side heavy duty velcro around the leading edge of the corrner of the interior sunroof opening. At the same time I attached the soft side (may require double thickness) on the edge of the sunshade on an angle so as the sunshade wants to slide back the velcro creates resistance and holds the sunshade in place. I am not even bothering with the rear shade at this point. I still hope MINI fixes this. Not too keen on using velcro to hold a 30K car together
Kind of a Rube Goldberg fix
but I find the sunshade setup on the R56 a definite step backwards from the R50/r53 that had an attachment handle.
If anyone has a better idea, let me know.

Yep, both of mine slide 2 or 3 inches open as well.
Has anyone tried sticking some cloth or other vinyl material over the sunshade material?? That would give us 100% shade when pulled shut. Just cut a piece of black or grey vinyl the same size as the material (with holes in it) on the shade, and spray it with some glue, and stick it on. Would that work in giving us a full sunshade??
Or better yet, can you take the sunshade out 9from roof) easily? Then maybee it comes apart and we can use a different material in it all-together?

Mine does the same thing. When I picked up my car yesterday, I show it to my MA and she told me they all do that. Anyone actually got it fixed? Good thing it is not a big problem for me because I like to open the shade when I drive.
I think I'll live with it
My 2003 MC didn't have this problem. This is another item that bmw should have left alone when updating the model. But I think I'll leave it because it sounds like there is no good fix. And as others have said, its not like the shade does much shading. Fortunately the weather is usually cool here.
add me to the list, my fronts open, pretty much instantly, I close it, it slides back open 2-3", which is just the perfect amount to let sunlight blind me
my car was built in july, so it's not an "early build" problem
it drives me friggin crazy, I'm going to shoot a video of it opening as soon as I let go of it, it really is annoying

I have the same issue with my 07 and did from the day I got it. But there is another solution to the problem if you are wanting to block out the sun.
Sunroof Graphics
This is a sunroof graphic on solid material. It blocks out the sun completley but still alows sunlight to come through like a stained glass window.
This is the outside view

This is the inside view with and with out the shade screen. I took this shot with a shop light on the other side of the glass.

I now have pre cut patterns for R35 and R56.For easier installs.

So, the shade on the R56 doesn't have a latch to keep the shade closed???
I live in TX and it's sunny and hot here 9 months of the year. I wish Mini had made a sunroof that would not let the sun through. The car becomes a virtual greenhouse during the day and the sun's glare is distracting while driving.
A new sunscreen will cure the problem you guys are having. The good thing about the R56 is you can fix the problem by removing both front and rear section glasses and replacing the sunscreen. The job takes a little under a hour from start to finish.
Just got Zoey back from service and they replaced her sun screen, and it works perfect.. It also appears to be a little darker tint than the old one and blocks the sun a little better. Stays put and rolls back good.
Just picked up our MC in Aug 07' from new dealer inventory and we also are experiencing the "mysterious sunshade opening 3-5 inches" issue.
We did get our sunroof glass tinted with "limo" tint a week after delivery which helped to cut back on the heat and not notice really notice the sunshade creep but nevertheless would like this fixed under warranty if possible.
I thought it may have been a air leak in the sunroof that would push the sunscreen back but cant really feel any air coming thru when the sunroofs are closed. Hopefully my assumption is wrong and its not due to ANY type of leak.
