oil change issues, need some wisdom...

So here is my dilemna,

I have an 04 cooper s with 37,000 miles on the clock. The service indicator screen reads that I have OVER 10,000 miles til my next service. This would be all fine except for the fact that I bought the car from my parents about 4,000 miles ago and have not done an oil change since and THEY can't remember the last time they had one done either. I know we need to change the oil every 10,000 miles (although i still think one should do it every 5k but who am i ha)

so what should i do? Should i bite the bullet and take it in to get the 65$ oil change? Should i spend 15$ less and do it myself? I heard once that MINI still does free oil changes up untill 40k, am i dreaming?

I need some NAM wisdom, help a fellow motorer out!

free if it's been over a year or below 200miles on the 'to go' display.
check with your dealer and ask them when was the last time your parents
brought in the car. they should have a history.

free eh? even if I am over the 36,000 mile mark? (only by a little but I still am!) I tried calling the dealer this morning but they had me on hold forever so I'm going to try back later, figured in the mean time I'd ask here.

Nope - free service ran out at 36K. You still have 13K of warranty left, though. Assuming the last change was done by the dealer, it should be written in your owner's manual. You may also be able to get the info from the dealer.
For the $15, you may as well get it done. (But I'd do it myself!) I'm a 5K type of person, too. Then again, I also don't put a whole lot of miles on the car, so I end up running up on time recommendations vs. mileage.

change the oil . period . every 7000 mls. that stuff isn't cheap and they know the engine will last more than the warranty. after that they could care less . it's a gimmick .

The counter sounds about right. It changes based on usage, so it can recommend up to 20K mile intervels if you are light footed enough on the gas. Per the manual, you should change the oil per the indicator or after one year (which ever comes first). Being told to change it every 5K because "it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside" isn't good technical advice. If you can't find out when the last change was from the dealer, go ahead and change it to be safe. Just make sure the counter is reset at that time.

If your counter isn't changing, then something is wrong with your car and it should be addressed. Synthetic oil will easilly last 20K miles without breaking down or turning into sluge in a properly running engine. There are several here in this forum that have around 200K miles on their engine and have only done the recommended oil changes per the computer.

I do a $65 oil change once a month on my explorer with full synth. oil as well...its a cheap way to help the life of your engine for sure. When in doubt about something that important just take care of it then that eliminates the question from here on out. Good luck

Change the oil. It's money well spent IMO.

it's marketing ; i can offer a free mainenance and look really good to a consumer ; then all i do is end up doing at best one oil change during the specified period due to the "counter" . it's a joke .

Depends on how close you are to the dealer to take advantage of the program, wipers, brakes, fluids, service, clutch......If the synthetic oil lasts that long and I haven't seen any affects that say otherwise, how can you say that it's a joke.

got it, so based on thoughts and advice I've decided to do the oil change myself, my last question is this. will doing an oil change affect my 50k mile warranty?

Tommy: Hey, I'll tell you what. You can take a good look at a butcher's a$$ by sticking your head up there. But, wouldn't you rather to take his word for it?
Mr. Brady: [confused] What? I'm failing to make the connection here son.
Tommy: No, I mean, you can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a butcher's a$$, but then..no. It's gotta be your bull.
Richard: [embarrased] Wow.
Tommy: Here's the deal. If I want you..
Richard: You have derailed.
Tommy: Shut up Richard.
Mr. Brady: Boy, I've really got a loss for words here.
Tommy: Forget it, I quit, I can't do this anymore, man. My head's about to explode. My whole life sucks. I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know where I'm going. My dad just died. We just killed Bambi. I'm out here getting my *** kicked and every time I drive down the road I wanna jerk the wheel INTO A Goshdanged BRIDGE EMBUNKMENT.
long story short change your oil.
