'06 R53: What's causing the howling noise?
We get the noise at any speed from about 30mph on up, and it drives us nuts. It's new to our MINI, say in the last couple thousand miles. How can I determine if it is the A-Pillar covers?
Fixed, of course, right before I leave the land of high speeds.....
That's OK. Perhaps you'll hit 120 in Hawaii as you're plummeting off a cliff into the Pacific... then you'd be able to think how nice it is that the howling isn't drowning out your little girl-ish scream. See? Good thing it's fixed.
I found that if I crack the side windows, the howl stops. So it seems the air movement outside at high speed, is creating a pressure situation, which is causing the windshield to bulge slightly.... howl.
It probably doesn't matter now that you've got it fixed, but I remember finding a TSB regarding a howling noise at high speed. The fix was to reseal one of the flaps in the HVAC system. I can try to find this TSB once I get home tonight, if anyone is interested...
abuzavi - When are you heading back to the states? Must be a real bummer to leave the land of high speeds. I'm hoping to make my next trip out there this winter or next spring...

Noise
I had this and found out it was the wiper. I changed out the rubber inserts and it went away. I used the Trico rubber to make my new "refills" because the old rubber was getting worn; my noise went away after that.
Hmmmmm.
Hmmmmm.
The R56 has the same problem.
I've also had it - about a year ago - at speeds of above 160kmph - and the dealer *fixed* it - well, it then came at speeds > 190kmph and I didn't complain anymore due to excessive gas prices. Now the howling noise returned (and yes, it is loud!) - sometimes at 150kmph, sometimes at 160kmph.
A short-term fix is always to accelerate up to > 210kmph for more than 10 seconds, until it goes away. Then it's also better at lower speeds. This diy fix however wil only work in countries without speed limits (okay, only there you'd realize the howling anyway) and acceptable traffic to reach the 210 for a few seconds.
Nevertheless, I really need to examin that now that my car is out of warranty and still full of stock issues

(btw.: yes, I'm living in Germany, so some parts of the autobahn are without speed limits)
