Great So Cal Roads
Was on all three of those raods today. Was pulled over the first time by a chp motor4cycle cop with a mixed group of cars, wrx's Minis, Elise , s2000,evo 8 etc and all given a " warning". Went 10 min further was pulled over by another chp in a cruiser for no front plate. After giving license and reg to the officer and opening the hood as requested a crotch rocket accelerated up to us in such a rapid rate of speed that the chp yelled for him to pull over. He said it was my lucky day and gave me back my paperwork and went to write the brain surgeon a fat Ticket. There is a BIG crack down on cars and bikes in the Santa monica range. DO NOT go on the roads listed here as they are the prime target.

Just kidding (I think). It's probably good for there to be an occasional police presence on roads like that - keeps traffic down and reminds everyone they're not on a racetrack.
I wish I was kidding but be my guest. Just make sure you have a front plate, no window tint, don't speed , don't be too loud and for God's sake keep the bottle of Jack Daniels capped
Seriously things will be tight in that area for the next 5 to 6 weeks . There are pleanty of good roads left even better ones but you will have to find those for yourself
Go to www.madmaps.com for some excellant world class drivers roads.

"Operation Safe Canyons"
Here is a blurb from the CHP
CHP Unveils Traffic-Safety Program Targeting Illegal Street Racing
Authorities Thursday unveiled a traffic-safety program for the Santa Monica Mountains designed to target the problems of illegal street racing and other unsafe driving practices in the area near Malibu.
Dubbed "Operation Safe Canyons," the enforcement effort will be conducted by teams of California Highway Patrol officers and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, said CHP Officer Leland Tang.
"On weekends, there is an increase of recreational vehicles, motorcycles, high-performance vehicles and bicyclists using these roadways," Tang said. "This increase in vehicular traffic creates a higher than normal demand for service calls and enforcement."
Tang said that the area's mountainous canyon roads "provide an environment for some motorists to engage in high-speed racing and other unsafe driving practices."
He said an increasing problem has been the organization of illegal events by use of the Internet.
Among the problems in the area:
Motorcycles and other vehicles being driven recklessly on Mulholland Highway, past the residential community west of Decker Canyon.
Motorcycles and other vehicles racing on Stunt Road.
High-performance vehicles racing into the early hours of the mornings on Stunt Road and neighboring canyon roads.
Motorcycles and other vehicles traveling in the wrong direction on Tuna Canyon Road while driving in a reckless manner.
And various instances of motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
"Our goal is to create and maintain an environment that promotes a safe and enjoyable use of the Santa Monica Mountains region for all," Tang said.
Also involved in the program will be Assembly Member Fran Pavley's office, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's office, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

I seriously would avoid the Santa monica ranges. Even if you are just CRUISING through them there's a chance you're going to get picked on. Worse is they will put your name on a special database to know how to bad they can treat you the next time you are seen in those areas. You don't really have to be speeding, if you have an exhaust that's making noise, that's enough for them to cite you. Increased patrol in desolate low-crime areas; your tax dollars at work.
Sorry guys... Its mostly my friends and my fault for alot of these rules. Infact, one of my best friends crashed his WRX off a cliff at the corner of Stunt and Las Flores... >_< Time to cut back on the canyon motoring...
In response to Randy about the lack of decent driving spots in the Malibu hills, you are mistaken. If you look hard, there are quite a few great spots to have some fun in the hills. Granted, the cops can be a problem in some cases. But if you know the common cop activity, it shouldn’t be a problem…

Road Map
Here is a map of San Diego area backroads. It was done by a friend of mine about 20 years ago. Don't worry all the roads were discovered decades ago. They are just getting more crowed in this age of message boards. It used to be that you had to show up on an invitational ride to get the map. Now people scan and post it.
Wynola Road is an old favorite of mine. So is Highway 74. Mt. Palomar South grade and East Grade are entertaining. But Mesa Grande and Old Julian Highway are less traveled. You can make some good loops in those areas. Highway 243 from Idyllwild to Banning is fun. So is Montezuma Grade down to Borrego Springs. There are dozens of others. Lots of nice roads up north too.

I saw on the news recently that there are a lot of patrols on Mt. Palomar these days because people (motorcyclists especially) are treating them as racetracks. I was driving down from Palomar toward Lake Henshaw a couple weeks ago, and I noticed that the motos have actually been laying down rubber through the turns. It looks like a friggin race track going up the mountain with lots of rubber being laid down on - and over - the center yellow line. I don't want to rain on my fellow enthusiasts' parade, but that's just irresponsible!
Palos Verdes//San Pedro
We have great road, right off 25th St in San Pedro called PV Drive E.
Alot of hair pin blind curves . alot of motorcycles take there chances daily on this road. Great handling for any car.
I have taken my MCS through and also my 500E Benz.
highly Recomended

Just north of 2nd street in long beach, there's a half mile stretch connecting studebaker to PCH on a road called loynes drive. They drill oil nearby, and I think the road is on top of some slews, so it's constantly shifting and bending and no matter how often they try to improve it, within a matter of months, it's ends up lumpy and twisted. And whole hell of a lot of fun to drive. I think I caught air last time I drove it. If you're already in the coastal regions of north OC or south LA, it's worth checking out. Or if you just happen to be cruising through on PCH. There are a lot of nice areas to hang out around there, too. westbound second sreet will take you right through belmont shore, and southbound PCH carries you past the Seal Beach Naval Armory, state beach, and wetlands preserve and into huntington beach. Not the most thrilling ride, but probably scenic enough to justify a detour down loynes. It's FUN.
It is interesting how the CHP calls driving reckless that might be considered skillfull and they call driving safe when it is dottering corner parking. I though California was the home of car culture. Is it only allowed to be all show and no go here? They bust impromptu parking lot gatherings too. I guess they only condone commuting and shopping. Where is the public outrage at this supression of our cultural expression?

For the most part they are young kids and the cars look like hell but it is the new " thing " for that demographic. We have a lot of that up in the SM mountains and I have seen it personally. Most bike riders really don't push it hard enough in the turns to leave rubber even tho they like to think they do.

Here are some pics from a ride through Decker Cyn earlier today.
Its an awesome ride, highly reccommended. For those who are unfamiliar, Decker Cyn is CA Hwy 23 between Pacific Coast Hwy (CA 1) and the Ventura Freeway (US 101). About 8 miles of MINI bliss.

Basically, I was agreeing with you that there were no "secret" roads on the map. There could be "secret" roads out there in terms of them being relatively undiscovered by motorers, but if there are, they aren't on that map!

It is the result of over a decade of exploring by the BMW Motorcycle Club of San Diego. It has all the roads. They are all well known. These days the big problem is the casinos in the back country creating huge traffic.
I could tell you about them, but then I'd have to kill you!
Ventura - Ojai - Cuyama - Santa Maria - Montecito
Hwy. 33 from Ventura to Ojai then north to Cuyama. At the "T" take a left on 166 to Santa Maria and the 101. So south to the 154 and take that to Santa Barbara. Get back on the 101 South. Take the San Ysidro exit. Take a left at the stop. Go to 192. Take a left and then another quick left into the shopping center. Eat a great meal at Via Vai. A wonderful Italian restaurant. After your meal and an espresso, go back to 101 south. Exit at Hwy. 150 to Ojai. This will "T" at Hwy. 33. Take 33 back to Ventura and return to wherever you came from!
A great, great day trip.
