Spark Plug Thread Repair: TimeSert. Anyone got a kit in SoCal?
Spark Plug Thread Repair: TimeSert. Anyone got a kit in SoCal?
My wife's '03 S rejected its plug again for the second time (first time in our ownership) and took what was left of the threads in the head with it this time. From the reading I've been doing, I want to go with a TimeSert.
Does anyone in So Cal (I'm in Escondido / San Diego county) who has the kit and who may be willing to allow me to rent or partial pay so that I can fix the one cylinder?
Or does anyone know of a shop in North County who will do it for a fair price?
However, if buying the kit will cost the same as a pro install, I'll just buy the kit.
Thanks for any help/guidance.

over 100 views and no responses. Either my thread title was too vague
or there are over 100 folks who could maybe help but needed to check me out before offering / not offering.*
Either way, I just ordered my own kit and it should be here later this week. Should anyone else find themselves in a similar situation, shoot me an email. I share.
*of course there is option C and D and so on, but I prefer conspiracy theories

Everything went smoothly with the install. The "deep" kit still isn't quite deep enough for my liking and I needed to use some long slim hemostats to pull the tooling back out. It was also a bit unnerving to do for the first time, not knowing what was right or what felt right, etc.
But the first test drive showed no problems. I imagine the proof is in the longevity but I'm happy to have been able to do it without having to do anything beyond opening the hood on the Cooper S, even with the intercooler right there.
Edit: BTW, the total cost of the repair = $200.61 with shipping.

Ok, I've run into a situation where the Time Sert won't work. I think this is a previously repaired head. The timesert tool threads in, but it's floppy and I'm pretty sure it won't hold a new timesert insert.
Anyone have a Big Sert they can loan me? Or something larger than a timesert?
and, FWIW, I'm still happy to loan out my regular timesert setup. You'll need to buy your own inserts as I'm out after loaning mine a few times.
probably best to just email me directly as I don't check the private messages here (looks like I missed someone asking to borrow it back in 2013. Sorry to whoever that was!!)
