Nice, I finished in 94 - Graphic Design and Photo (Worked in the Cave as well) .. Was working on Film as well, never got that finished. I stay in touch with most of all my old crew, but haven't really run into anyone living in the glorious city of Columbia SC from SCAD with the exception of my old business partner of the design firm we use to own.

I work with a bunch of SCAD grads in Atlanta too. They're all early 90's grads.

I will, in fact, be a grad student at SCAD, so it's good to know about the shuttle service. I didn't realize it was so extensive

I figure that I'll be biking to class/library/town. It didn't seem that far, and I need a little more exercise in my life. Do the shuttles, by chance, have bike racks?
Thats awesome. What's your degree going to be in? I don't think the Shuttles have bike racks. Also, make sure if you have a bike that is easily disassembled, you make it not so. IE... if its got quick release wheels and seat, you may want to make them permanent, and/or take the seat in class with you. This largely depends on where you are of course, For instance, at the GulfStream center of Design, it was perfectly safe to leave it out front locked to the rack, but downtown near say... the book store, people would get seats and wheels stolen all the time.

Anywho. Hope you love Savannah, I miss it, but until there is more industry there, it's near impossible to find good design work.

Unfortunately, Born2Slow didn't get the job thing worked out at all So he's trying to get a job in Pittsburgh, which is where I'm from and where the rest of my family is. I'll be doing Savannah by myself until such a time as he can find a job, or I finish my degree.

jy -- I'm headed toward a MFA in architectural history, already have a BA in historic preservation (not from SCAD) so I'm hoping it'll make me more employable Thanks for the bike suggestion! I don't think I ever would have thought of that... at least not until I returned to a seatless or wheelless bike.

I'm extremely psyched to have found something in town. Just for giggles, I thought I'd take a ride out to Whitemarsh Island, to check out the "apartment community" I'd already made an appointment to see: I would have DIED if I'd had to live out there. Traffic sucked, bigtime. But I did find rents on Whitemarsh and Tybee to be very reasonable, actually.

I really wanted to buy a house, but I don't plan on being there past the 3-3.5 years it'll take me to finish the MFA. And that's just long enough to be nailed by a hurricane, but not long enough to ride out blips in the housing market. Bah humbug: apartment life for me.

Thanks for all your help, guys! I'll be sure to wave at all MINIs

digging up an old post here, but this thread is actually the best info I've found about living in Savannah from all of the research I did tonight. See, my GF is going to graduate nursing school this year and always wanted to move away for a while. The top of her list is Savannah and according to the stats Savannah is a great place to do it from a cost/pay perspective. As such I've started looking at what it's like, but there doesnt' seem to be any real info available online as far as renting anything but a cookiecutter place in a community.

How much is 'a lot'? I mean we would just be renting for a year or so unless the place really caught us... but where I live has a ridiculously high cost of living and real estate is crazy. I'm from philly so a little crime doesn't scare me, but I'd rather live in a nice place. so what is what? I dont think I'd want to go over $1200 a month because we plan on saving up while we're down there so we can come back and put a down payment on a house. I can't find anything good online so am I out of my gourd here? am I high? low? Is it really that bad living in the historic district? I'd definately need a garage for our cars so is that impossible too? should I just look outside of the city a bit? I'm a city kind of guy so hopefully there is plenty of stuff going on!

thanks in advance for your help!

Yesssss! More MINIS!

I think you could find a NICE place to rent for $1200/month. My apartment is in Ardsley Park (I think about 2 miles from the historic district, but iminently bikeable), it's about 800 sqaure feet, high celings (9', I'd guess), hardwood, really just a neat apartment -- 1BR/BA -- and it's $650/month.

When I was looking, I went to Cora Bett Thomas realty (www.corabettthomas.com), checked out their listings, got keys for the ones that intrigued me and just went looking at them by myself. They seemed to have a lot of really nice places to rent in the historic district, most around $900-1500/month. I mean REALLY nice. One I almost rented was phenominally gorgeous, actually - a 1 br with washer, dryer, off-street parking, 2 fire places and windows that were about 5' high x 3' wide. Probably 900 square feet - it was $950/month.

I found very few properties with an available garage, though, and I'm still trying to figure out where I'm going to do my oil changes. The apartment I'm renting DOES have a garage-type building behind it, but I was told it was for storage. It looked pretty small, but then... I do drive a MINI . I pick up my keys Tuesday, so we'll see if I can cram my car in there...

PS. Don't know if you've seen it, but www.savannahoffthebeatenpath.com is kind of a fun little site about stuff in Savannah. Nothing about rentals, but heavy on general interest info.

PS. Since nobody effectively warned me: if roaches in your apartment is the kind of thing that might freak you out and keep you up nights with a flashlight, you may want to reconsider.

Off to call the hypnotherapist.

Whatever gets you to sleep at night...

He was back... now he's off again. Just dropped him at the airport at 5 (gah!). Can't wait to get him back this weekend, though, and actually spend some time with him!
