i met with a lawyer today and basically i found out i have no rights at all. i can threaten to sue but i wasn't fired because of my race/gender/age or because of a worker's comp claim so basically my former employer could fire me for sneezing.

you gotta love laws that protect people/businesses with money that can buy influence. i think i'll move to germany. the way our freedoms are being repealed here and the rich are constantly getting more and more tax breaks... AAAAAGH!!!

i'm gonna have to start my own political party. ultra left wing radicals unite to confront the conservative menace before we are all forced into slave labor because we can't afford to buy our own freedom!!!

Hi Andy,

Man can I agree with your frustration. Its a big concern of mine too! The gap seems to be widening in the income differential, leaving a lot of people and families with barely enough to get by on!
But don't think for a minute the deal is going to be any rosier in Deutchland. The thing that still stings me from personal experience is the blatant arrogance that I have experienced from some of the people there! Besides, there economy right now is not as good as it is here. I have friends in Germany and Switzerland that are "just getting by" and that means with a bicycle, not a MINI !!
This system is by no means perfect but I wouldn't want to try to make a living anywhere else!! And both sides of the political isle can be blamed and praised for the "state of the union" What one gives the other takes, what one squanders the other gives away - you can't win !!!
Lets start the Common Sense Party  !!
Best Regards,
Ron

Minigleep, I have to agree with RonR, as being American and living in Switzerland or Germany might not be so great. There are plenty more Iraqi's in Germany then here. And you as an American not blending in and not speacking the language so good, could be a prime target.

In Switzerland the PTT wanted $1,000.00 deposit for our phone service, becaue they knew i would be calling America ll the time. Luckly my company paid the deposit. I called from work..lol

The cars are not bad in price, and you can get a loan pretty easily, if you have a stable job for 6 months. Depending on the region you settle in, friendly to English, the stores might be opened on Sunday, otherwise, we made trips to the Airports to get what was forgotten on Saturday, that also was a vent relief to see the locals.

I did not have a problem, as my family is from Wiesbaden, and I spoke the language. They laughed at me in Switzerland, as a southern boy talking German sounded pretty funny.

Later and good luck. Hope to see you Saturday.

yeah, i know the economy is draggin in europe especially germany but there are IT jobs especially in systems admin and i have a friend there that i can stay with while i get established.

their system has its problems but the workers there also aren't super stressed out or going without health insurance. they're protected from random firings to a large degree and if they get injured they don't have to carry disability insurance. employers and employees benefit from not paying for health insurance. citizens that meet academic criteria go to university for free instead of depending on scholarships.

there are hardly any homeless because the govt tries to rehabilitate people with problems and support people who can't find work.

stuff like that will never work in the USA because it's too socialist and it would dig into the pockets of too many powerful industries/special interests.

oh well.

Dude sorry to hear the news.
I lost my job at the begining of March. The company I worked for called it quits. I know it's different then the way you were "let go" but I'm in the same boat.
It's actually working out ok so far, trying to get my freelance career back.
Anyway I feel for ya!
Good Luck, hope it turns out to be the begining of something great for you!
