I was trying to find a post I made some time in 2003/2004. I searched for all posts by my name and it only went back 500.
Are they gone, over written/deleated?

Searches only return the first 500 results. You need to restrict the search by using the Advanced Search. Enter your name under "Search by User Name", and filter results by entering keywords and/or set "Find Posts from" to A Year Ago and Later.
