There are many things about the new NAM format which represent an improvement over the old format, but one thing about the old format: you could post photos into the Gallery and use HTML links to place them in the forum threads.
Now, you have to go to a web hosting service (free, but there's more hassle). Is it any wonder that you see fewer photos posted on threads now?
For those not photographically inclined, it probably doesn't make a difference, but for us camera buffs, it makes a huge difference.

Mark is working on the gallery.
In the meantime, you can upload pictures up to 800 by 600 using "Manage Attachments"
To use Manage Attachments, when you post, look below the text box for the manage attachments. Click on the button and a pop-up window will come up that enables you to scan your hard drive for pictures to upload (just like before). The pictures upload and are included at the bottom of your post as clickable thumbnails.
I know that's not the complete solution, but like I said this is being worked on and it is our #1 priority.
