NAM running slow???
as of right now, hanging at facebook
It's been running very slow for me for a month or so.
A long wait waiting for reply from the site, then the cpu goes up to 70-90% for
a 10-30 seconds, the browser freezes and says not responding, then the site
finally loads. It happens every time I pull up a new post as well.
This is on more than one computer, XP with IE8 on my main home
computer and one of my work computers are especially bad, but W7 with IE9
at my work is also slow, but not as bad. Worst is through the AOL 9.7 browser at home,
but even IE8 by itself is slow.
Is this a slow script command or ads that are slow to load or something else?
I have thouroughly uninstalled and reinstalled my browser software, reset IE, fiddled
with settings for efficiency, disabled add-ons, cleared out clutter, etc. without any improvement.

Why do you think I'm not on this forum much anymore
They are so involved thinking everybody needs fast speed for the smart phone's and tablets that they forgot some of us still like to use a computer so they just don't care if we have to wait as much as five min. to do anything on this site. I like using my AOL and this site is useless on it. Chrome or Firefox is fine but both are a PITA compared to AOL.

Run the most up to date stabel version of the browser of your choice. And while I do not use IE or AOL, I did some research and AOL browser is 6 years discontinued so I'm assuming you're talking about AOL desktop in which case their latest stated stable release is 10.1, so anything on AOLs side that has been fixed is most likely addressed by installing the latest version. IE is showing their latest as being 10, but IE9 appears to be more backward compatible, I cannot tell if 10 is Windows 8 only. As was your comparison between home and work you saw improvement when running the more current browsers.
Sometimes things do slow down for me, and it may take 10 or so seconds to load a page, when that happens I start to watch for what parts of the page pop up, it may be an ad a plugin or just a thread with lots of photos and you're waiting for the images to load, if you can narrow down that it's something specific on the page and the rest of the internet works fine we may be able to get that adjusted. Clearing cookies and cache may also help. If everything is slow it may be an issue with your DNS or service provider.
I am not aware of anything that's been changed or would have been running recently that would be a culprit of slow loading speeds, but I did pass this along to the tech team so they are aware and can do their checks.

I've had great success with Firefox, but I've customized it for a clean appearance and organization that fits me and I know Chrome runs on a very simplistic design (and it actually just loaded the NAMLive page faster than it loaded the google search result for NAM).
A few things, with the CPU usage, I'd run an anti-virus scan to make sure that is not the root of your problems.

Waiting 5mintues is not normal, and not my experience with accessing NAM and I spend 99% of my NAM time on the computer. While a lot of effort has gone into making a mobile interface a reality for members, at the request and urging of many members over a extended time period, the goal of the mobile app is to make it so that it is easier to stay tied to the conversation with the computer users and it really is the bulk of the traffic. The goal isn't phones or computer traffic, it's fostering a community and by adding an avenue of access we've been able to increase participation in that community. Also a mobile app is irrelevant to why AOL is not working, it's about the same as blaming a dead battery on a tank of bad gas.

This include full system scans weekly and quick scans daily.
Also did the full scan from the current Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool
a week or two ago (it takes about 4-5 hours for that to run!) as a doublecheck.
I have AOL Desktop 9.7 which is actually newer than 10.1, and the most
current version (there is a beta version of 9.7+ or whatever they're going to call
it coming out soon, but the only new thing on it is improved Windows 8 compatability) .
I have Windows XP at home, so IE8 is the newest one supported.
Windows7/IE9 faster than XP/IE8 faster than XP/AOLD9.7, but all
are much slower with NAM than other sites.
Cookies are weeded out and cache cleared regularly as well.
Choosing aol's option to compress online images doesn't speed things up either.
Not sure how to tell what on the page is slowing things down.
Can't really tell from watching it as it usually waits a long time, then loads
pretty much all at once.

back in the fall I was pretty disgusted with NAM performance (W7 and IE9 with a fast processor and cable) Every other 'board' I used was OK but NAM would just load like it was sunk in mud.
Then I visited my daughter and she's got an iMAC. I played on NAM and it loaded as fast as anything else I accessed. I noticed she was using Chrome on her Mac.
When I came home I tried Chrome on my PC and NAM went back to 'normal'. I don't use Chrome for anything else . . IE is fine for everything else. I think it has to do with the advertising hooks . . .
I was an IT guy for 30 years having begun when IT meant punched cards and toggle switches on the front panel ... I was a grad student at PURDUE when AT&T gave us two VAX machines and funded a project to make them talk to each other and the 'arpanet' was 5 locations. A major break thru was discovering how to built a "null modem' . . . and Professor Comer was beginning to talk about this thing called TCP/IP in his network class . . his major interest was still compilers at the time.
I try to not get TOO involved anymore even tho everyone in the family calls me when their machine burps!

i think it is one of the ad-servers
if i load firefox "bare", without my ad-blocker and do-not-track addons, NAM on firefox loads much slower than with the addons loaded
the ad-blockers and do-not-track addons for ie are not as effective as the firefox addons i guess because ie is much slower than firefox on all of my pcs
in particular, facebook is loading something that takes a long time, i see it on the bottom status line in firefox with the addons disabled

Hi everyone,
Drew, thanks for the link to this thread.
I am sorry to hear you guys are having issues with the site. I am not running any ad blockers, or anything, and it's pretty quick for me (mac using safari).
I see some of you have FF installed. Could you install a plugin called 'firebug', turn it on, enable the 'net' tab, then reload the site with that tab showing. You can essentially see how long every single element on the page takes to load. You can expand the view to fill your whole browser window as well. If you could then please take some screenshots and share them with us,w e'll be able to see (hopefully), exactly what it is that's dragging your load times down. Then we can address it!
Thanks for your patience, and help. We'll work with you to get this diagnosed and resolved.
cheers,
robb

I do sometimes see one of the ad servers hang up. But I haven't had that issue recently. Is it running slowly for you right now?
