The Shift Indicator Light is a feature from the legendary John Copper Works racing division. Different colored LED's are illuminated depending on the engine revs. All LED's flash when the set engine revs threshold is exceeded. The adjustable engine rev threshold needs to be set before installation or once installed on the car. The engine speed threshold can be set between 3500 rpm and 7250 rpm in increments of 250 rpm. This makes the shift indicator not only an great item for sporty drivers and weekend racers, but also for the driver focusing on better fuel economy.
I had this in my 2004 MC40 for about 5 months and it worked great. Out Motoring has this new for $228.95.

 

Now this was a great item and good price. I have it retro on my r53. Took a little drimel work to get it to fit right.

 

I'm interested in this but I wonder how hard the install is...

 

What year do you have is the question. If you have newer than r53 there is a part that's not pictured that you just swap the whole top out and wire up. If you gave r53 you have to take tac off then that top part behind the wheel. Drill hole in it. Then wire up. The wiring conversion is posted online. That's how I found it. The original shift light for the r53 mounts above the speed gauge on dash and isn't that good. Google r56 to r53 jcw shift light retrofit.

I have a R53 so it won't be a retro fit. And nope.

 

Is this the newer model for gen 2 cars ie. will it fit a 2012 JCW Coupe without modification? I thought the Gen 2 version included the indicator light housing as well as the upper cover for the steering column? I'm not sure if it's all one piece or if they can be taken apart. The light housing you have pictured looks like the Gen 2 but minus the steering column piece.

If I can get a couple things sold this week i'll pick it up if its still around.

 

This is a gen 2 R56 light modified to fit an R53. This light does not come attached to the R56 plastic steering column plate. Modification will be required to install this in any MINI.
