05 Nav system

My sister brought her 05 s in for a power steering problem that was fixed when she picked it up the nav system did not work. It worked before the tow truck picked up the car the dealer says nothing can be done except replace the unit. any one have a problem like this?

Doesn't make much sense. Does it read the Nav DVD? Any signs of life, or is it completely dead?

it trys to read the disc but says it is bad. The dealer said to buy a new disc. We barrowed a known good disc and still does not work. Any thoughts?

Was it flat towed or tow hooked?

The "known good disc" was borrowed from what year MINI?

Ensure your known good disc is a DVD, not CD; try disconnecting the battery - not sure it would do any good, but it can't hurt...

What did the dealer say after that? It was evidence that a new disc may not work either.

Try resetting by disconnecting the car battery for a few minutes. If all else fails, at least an '05 is still under warranty (if not too many miles) and Nav replacement would be covered.

dont you love taking your car in for one thing and having the dealer say that you have to pay for something to get fixed that worked before you took it! I have a Jeep that was getting a dealer install nav system and when i got it back the cover for the shifter wasnt on straight then I noticed 2 of the clips that hold it on were broken they denied they did it and told me I could buy a new piece form them!!

Might be worth trying to update the firmware. If they tried a current disk and you are on an older firmware I doubt it would work.

What firmware version is the system on? You can find this out by going to settings and posting the numbers in the upper right of the screen.

The next thing to do is as previously suggested: disconnect the battery for about a minute (10 seconds minimum) and reconnect. Leave the disc out when you do that and wait for the monitor to tell you that you need to insert the disc. If that doesn't happen, then it's in the circuitry. Try inserting the disc. If it still says bad disc, then try to find another nav disc for an '04-'06 DVD system. Don't trust the dealer to give you one that works. If the problem still exists, then the DVD heads were somehow damaged or put out of alignment. In that case maybe an electronics repair shop can fix it.

If you had the CD reader, I would just mail you one of my outdated database versions, but since that's not the case...

It seems to be not too unusual for the laser to fail. It is a possible cause of your problem, and replacing just the laser component can be done at reasonable cost. Look at these threads:
http://www.x5world.com/navigation-sy...-problems.html
http://www.x5world.com/navigation-sy...-nav-unit.html
The posts on those threads are from Europe, and refer to European suppliers. However the laser head SF-HD4 seems to be fairly generic and there is a vendor on eBay selling them for $16.50. You can probably also find the part locally in Silicon Valley.
