Driver Side Window wont work.

We have had this re-occuring problem with our '04 Cooper, where the driver side window wont do anything. It doesn't raise or lower the 1/4 inch when you open or close the door, and doesn't respond to the window switch.

Is there something I can do at home, or will it require going to the dealer for warranty work?

I know that when you start the car, you have to wait until the dash lights turn off before starting the car,or else random things like this start to happen. can anyone find that thread? try starting the car and wait for the temp. and gas light (red) to turn off. thats what I always do. Good luck@

Interesting.... However, the window has been un-reponsive for the last three days. Generally, it will work again the next day.

Sounds like a power window motor, which unfortunately fails often in BMW products. Apparently, the motor has plastic blades, and pieces of the blades shear off and jam up the motor. At least that is what NAM tells me...

take it to the dealer, im sure your underwarranty right? as long as you dont have the front windows tinted, my MA tells me that will void my window warranty.

I had the same problem (with tinted windows). It was the window motor and it was replaced under the warranty. Hope this helps. It's a pain when you have to go through toll booths and pay at the parking garage. They look at you weird when you get out of the car

Yes, it's the motor.
The proper fix is a new motor - a short term repair is:
Hit the door panel, right below the handle you use to open the door, while at the same time clicking the window switch - this will jog the motor and get current flowing, so the motor turns.
It will then stay working for a while - maybe a day, maybe a month ...

Not exactly the news I was hoping for. I think the car is over 50k mile mark, though not sure by how much. Would the dealer be willing to still honor the warranty? I metioned it to them twice before when it was in for service, but they said unless it's currently not working, they wont touch it.

Just spoke to the wife on her way home from work, and she said the car has 50,524 miles on it. I called our local dealer (Mini of the Woodlands) and spoke with the service rep and explained to him the situation. He said he will still honor the warranty since it's only a few hundred miles over it's experation. So we've got an appointment set for tomorrow morning to drop it off.

My MCS has had the passenger window motor replaced at 9K and both window motors replaced at 15K. I fear the expiration of the warranty!

My driver's side motor went out at about 33,000 miles. Luckily, in the "up" position. Warranty fixed it at my dealer. Luckily, I hadn't modded the window mechanism.

Driver's window on 03 MCS went at 6k miles, passenger at 15,600 And it's got tints just like plenty of Hondas and Toyotas that continue to work till you junk them.

Back to the dealer again. Did I mention the fuel gauge just went?

regards,
Red

Another Power Window Failure

My 04 Cooper S (56k miles), has drivers window that no longer works. I have no tint, sounds like some poor engineering for so many problems with the windows. Has anyone fixed these themselves? Is it hard to get the door panel off? Thanks in advance for any help.

If NOTHING happens when you hit the switch (no grinding, no movement, just silence) it is probably the motor. My '04 MCS is still under (extended) warranty, so I don't know how much $ to fix, but I'll bet the dealer would quote "R&R Driver's window motor" job to you, as well as the price of the parts at the counter. If you don't mind opening up the door panel, it probably is'nt too bad, labor-wise. My passenger side window just went belly-up the same way, too. I'm scheduled for 6/20 to get that fixed (warranty). And, I only have about 36k on the car!!

FWIW, I think it's likely outsourcing to the "low bidder" rather than poor engineering.

I wonder if there is a non-OEM replacement that is better?

Anybody?

Depends if they have the part and when they can schedule you. I had more warranty work than just this, and they did it in one day.

Don't you wish they had roll up windows?

Good luck!

Don't forget that parts like this are excellent candidates for salvage in yards. Most cars that are totalled are front- or rear-ended and stuff like this is untouched. Dilligant web searching might save you buku bucks, and I'd bet that this wouldn't be too difficult a repair of you had a service manual and a nice shady spot on a lazy afternoon- I don't have a service manual, but I'd imagne that such a part literally plugs in, right?

Lots of salvage places have computerized inventories now, even, that will at LEAST tell you the cars they have in, if not the actual parts they've stripped off of them. If they're out of state, shipping shouldn't bee too bad.

I remember my dad getting all kinds of parts like this for his Caddies and Toyotas- windsheild-wiper motors, window motors, etc. are all generally available at really reduced prices.

Just mentioning it for the folks that are out of warranty.

My driver window just went out today, or so it seems. I press the button and I hear a click but the window doesn't go. Any tips? tried to hold up the lock & window up position. Tried hitting around the speaker... not sure whatelse I can do...

Edit - Finally got the window to roll down. Using the above techniques... Just took many attempts before it moved. I guess I'm in the market for a new window motor?
