I always thought the safety chains were in case the trailer popped off the ball and had nothing to do with the drawbar potentially coming off the car(can't imagine that happening if installed as intended). You could be right, maybe I have just mis-understood the intentions of having safety chains though.

This setup is not 100% fail safe, and it does not protect you in the case of losing the drawbar.....but.....I have never heard of someone losing a drawbar, I have heard many many cases of people having the trailer pop off the ball.
