Cold Air Intake Mods in STX

Regarding this discussion in the G-Stock Forum
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...484#post551484

At what point is the air box modification allowed to conform with the rules?

Quote:
I would point to rule 14.10 B. The air intake system up to, but not including, the engine inlet may be modified or replaced. For naturally aspirated engines, the engine inlet is the inlet to the throttle body or carburetor. For turbocharged or supercharged engines, the engine inlet is the compressor inlet. The existing structure of the car may not be modified for the passage of ducting from the air cleaner to the engine inlet.

It would seem to fall outside of the restrictions noted in 14.10 B. I think the plastic separation sheild would be part of the stock airbox intake system because it has a hole already in it for that purpose and it is definitely not part of the car structure between the air cleaner element and the engine inlet. Other opinions?????

This has been discussed before but I'll cover it again. Before even the Alta intake came out I brought up the subject, to Vince Bly (2003 MCS STX owner) on the STAC (Street Touring Advisory Committee) of the Randy Webb mod of drilling holes in the back wall to allow more air in to the air box that is created by such intakes as the Mini Madness. I felt like this was not legal based on my understanding of the rules and my years of experience in ST. The wall in question is in no way part of the OEM air box but has a air tube that connects to it. Many cars have air tubes that run trough fenders and maybe if the MINIs tube went through the back wall this would be easier to understand but the hole in the fender is not considered part of the intake and can't be enlarged. Anyway, Vince discussed this with the rest of the STAC and they agreed that it's not legal. When the ALTA came out I again talked to Vince, same result, not legal. There are now several good intakes on the market that modify this back wall that I would love to use, including the JCW, but we are stuck with the Madness and HAI type intakes.

Think of the possibilties though if this were not the case and the back wall was considered part of the intake system. Where does the air come from? WOW, those grills under the windshield! I'm going to take those suckers out and mount some big *** scoops out over the hood and run the biggest tubes I can get through the old grill area straight to the filter. Now we're talking serious air flow.

We can always hope that the 2006 JCW will be a factory install option and be STX legal (not yet discussed but don't hold your breath on it being STX legal) and that the STAC will reverse itself on the update backdate rule and therfore make the JCW intake legal.

Edit, 5/31/06 The Alta intake can be legally installed, if the back wall is left unmodified, it can be done I've seen it.
