Mod list for DSP, here goes the Moola!!!

I am currently at 2450lbs, here are the mods that I have on my list currently, it would drop probably 100lbs, so I would be looking at 2350. Any other suggestions on mods besides pulling out stereo and such????

Non-supercharger pullies $300
Headers $600
Flywheel (-20lbs) $1500
No Cats (-15lbs) $400
15" Hoosier 225/45/15 rubber (-10lbs) $700
Keizer 15X9 or 15X8 wheels $1320
Racing seats(-30lbs) $1000
lightweight battery(-25lbs) $75
Sway bars $300
H-Sport Lowering Springs (Is this a competitive way to go, or will it require coilovers?)$300
Koni SA's (already have, not sure if these are optimal paired with springs) $600
Alta CAI $250
Quaffie LSD $1500??
Camber plates $400
Camber arms (rear) $200
ECU(no boost adjustments) $700
Throttle Body $400

Man, thats gonna run me $10K! Not sure if I can pull the trigger on this or not. I need to win a few national championships first so I can get some sponsorship here!!!! :-))))

I could really go ***** and take the A/C out, but then I'd probably pass out while competing so I'm skipping that step for now.

OasisT,

Some comments as I have very many of these upgrades in SM class.
Loosing weight is a very good thing. The more the better.
Spending alot is not required, it's only a temptation and mirage that you will chase after like a big deep money pit. Focus on those things that will bring a tangible gain first and then hone your driving skills to the max. In the end it is driver skill that makes the most difference and not equiptment.

Worthwhile upgrades to consider-
Flywheel (-20lbs) $1500- $499 for the part either RDR or UUC see labor LSD
Quaife LSD $1500??- $1070 for the part and $900-$1500 to install with flywheel and racing clutch (add another $300)
15" Hoosier 225/45/15 rubber (-10lbs) $700- careful not to flatspot and cord them on your first time out! Do you have lots of R-compound experience?
Keizer 15X9 or 15X8 wheels $1320- 15x9 is heavier
Racing seats(-30lbs) $1000- need two?
lightweight battery(-25lbs) $75- this is fine
Alta CAI $250- Or RDR or Hot Air intake- take your pick
Sway bars $300- Only the H-sport Comp rear bar $220, not the front
Camber plates $400-front RDR plates $550 plus $200 install
Camber arms (rear) $200- rear H-sport or RDR lower adjustable arms $240
H-Sport Lowering Springs (vs coil overs-talk to Randy Webb or Eric Savage/Helix13)$240 plus $180 to install with the rear control arms
Get a four wheel thrust alignment for autocross. Maybe -2.2 to -2.4 degrees negative front camber and toe out zero to 1/16 and -1.2 to -1.4 degrees rear negative camber and toe in zero to 1/16. Set castor to stock settings.
Consider a larger air to air intercooler- wait for the RDR- it will be much less costly than the Alta IC.
Helix Short shifter- very positive throws-keeps stock **** height.$45

Things to put on hold for good reason-
Non-supercharger pullies $300- costly and unknown how beneficial it is.
Headers $600- with no race cat there is no dyno evidence that it helps.
No Cats (-15lbs) $400- All dynos of headers no cat show no gains, only louder
ECU(no boost adjustments) $700- no need since high cost and moddest gains
Throttle Body $400- Easy install, worth about 1-2 HP on the high rpm end.
No ignition upgrades- wires plugs and coils not helpful for autocross.
Strut bar- not helpful for autocross
Front sway bar- not helpful for autocross

Without adding the pulley you have not that much in power mods. If you really want to consider the ECU upgrade then talk to Randy about the Unichip and the Powerchip for stock MCS with mods not including the pulley.

Loosing weight, having LSD with racing clutch and light flywheel, having a tuned suspension with good autocross alignment and sticky R-compound tires will go a long way. Good luck.

Thanks for the GREAT post, you saved me a couple G's by not having to expirement and do things that are not the best.

Yes, I have probably 40 events of R-compound experience. I am doing fairly well in the Midwest division G-Stock(www.midivsolo.org), but I've always had the urge to Mod, I've just always enjoyed tinkering under the hood and can't resist past nationals. I'm going to see how nationals goes in G-Stock to see where I stand, then after nats, I'm going to start slinging mods to get setup for 2005.

So, were there any additional mods that you found really beneficial for SM? I figured DSP would be the end of the line for the Mini as far as competitiveness, although it may even be a bit on the short end for DSP, only time will tell though. Oh, I'm talking top 5 competitive nationally since locally its only driver dependent.

On the wheels, Keizer can build a 15X9 at around 10.5 lbs, do you think that the 15X8 would be just as beneficial? It would probably ring in at 9.5lbs or so.

I've got the alignment taken care of already in stock class as you recommended without, of course, the camber

Once again, I appreciate the input.

Craig Wilcox

OasisT,

You're right, in SM the biggest difference from DSP is the reduction pulley and maybe a good ECU upgrade that is tuned for that size pulley. Other than that everything else is the same.

For SM the greatest mods over and above stock classes are-
19% reduction pulley for power
Quaife LSD with lightweight flywheel/racing clutch
R-compound tires- Hoosiers or Kumho Ecsta V700/Victoracers
Suspension adjusted for enough negative camber front and rear and balanced to minimize understeer.

So of these, in DSP you can have everything covered except for the pulley.
To get some power you can-
Do intake, cat-back exhaust, and larger air to air intercooler
Maybe version 38 of ECU software update- supposed to be good.
All the other mods are to deliver power through the wheels to the ground.
Being lightweight helps the power to weight ratio.

For the 10% weight difference between the 15x8 and 15x9 I would think that the 15x8 would be the best compromise between giving you a bit more width than 15x7 and a better contact patch but at the same time it keeps the weight at a minimum where you want it in the wheels.

Autocross really isn't that high speed, it's steering, shifting a little, braking a little and maintaining balance at all times so as not to loose time.

Good luck.
