D Stock Is a CG LOCK a good investment for a novice?
I bought the Schroth belt and am happy I did. I race in Midwest Council, and there GCR specifically lists 4 point Scroth as acceptable for many classes.
WATCH OUT for the MINI built in pretensioner / antisubmarine belt. The inboard female end has a 2 inch bellows just below the buckle. If you follow that you will find that the belt is anchored to something that says Nobel Dynamyte on it. There are two wires connected to this device, and they are not the ones that detect you have the belt in use.
Schroth says that in a crash the mini pretensions the belt by 2 inches, and that is why they don't need an anti submarine strap, as their belt is pulled down by the MINI. Schroth includes a 2 inch "tear out" section in the inboard shoulder belt to compensate for that.
Just imagine how tight your belt is going to get if you have it Locked or Twisted and tight when that Pretensioner activates!

I inquired of CG Lock in regard to explosive tensioners. The (very prompt) reply:
"We have tested the CG-Lock with a pyrotechnic
pretensioner as part of our safety testing of the
device. The CG-Lock will not prevent the pretensioner
from working correctly, or will it degrade the
performance of the seatbelt system.
As far as the worries of the person that posted in
regards to injury resulting from the pretensioner
operating.. A pretensioner simlple removes slack from
the seatbelt. They are widly used in todays vehicles,
and very safe. Pyrotechnic pretensioners have been
used in European vehicles for many years, they are
nothing new. The pull in force of a pyrotechnic
pretensioner is mininal in comparsion to the forces
generated during a 35 mph collision.

I have the CG Locks in the Mini, but
You can also get a wide aux belt from places like OG Racing that come in what is known as "wrap-around" style. It has a true racing harness connector. But it is only as secure as your seat since it is secured to the seat. It is far more comfortable and since it is 4 inches wide or more, it distributes the load better. Price is about the same as a CG Lock, but it has been a few years since I bought one.
If you get CG Locks, make sure you tell them you have a MINI because the regular pieces they use don't work on the MINI. Their alternative attachment works fine.

Also I would never buy a racing harness second hand.

Used my new curved-clamp CG-Lock at the autocross a couple weeks back, and I'm pretty impressed with the difference it made. I didn't realize how much I was being tossed around in the car, but once my butt was firmly planted in the seat it was evident.
I've been autocrossing for quite awhile now, and was always timid of installing a harness, ANY harness, without a rollbar. When a Schroth rep told me he'd never consider running a harness in any car without a cage, I decided not to go with the clip-in harness... And, riding in an MCS with a full harness and then switching back to my car, I find the CG-Lock is darn near as good, IMHO. I know there's a lot of debate about the clip-in harness being safe, supposedly being safe, etc., but to me it's not worth the risk - without the safety of a cage, I'd like to be able to duck my head in the case of a rollover, instead of using my neck as a collapseable column...

I am a rookie so you may want to look at the other posts as well. I too have to give the CG Lock a thumbs up. Unlike the clip that comes with a baby seat I can leave it in the car all the time. In my day to day travels the seat belt functions just like normal - that is as if the CG Lock was not on. When I go to a school, autocross or just driving twisty roads in the mountians I click the keeper in place.
CG Help!
I got a CG Lock about a week ago and found that the cap screws were the wrong size. I emailed the company asking for some proper screws but no response. I now read that the MINI needs some special parts to work right.
Does anyone here have any pull with CG Lock. There is no phone number and I have a $40 paper weight

My CG Lock works great. I did not specify that I had a MINI and my seat belt looks just like the one in the instruction video on their website. I never heard that MINI's need a special CG Lock. Maybe I got lucky. I got two extra cap screws with mine. Everything fits. Good luck.
I just got back from a ride through the twisties after installing a CG-Lock. The improvement in ability to handle the car is HUGE.
This US$40 device allows you to snug up the lap belt portion of your seat belt, and keeps it snug, so you are attached to the car much more firmly. It provides about 2/3 of what a racing harness adds in control, but is street-legal and convenient.
http://www.cg-lock.com/
The ability to handle the car when you aren't fighting to stay in your seat is greatly improved, and hard braking can be much more precisely modulated, since you aren't being thrown forward during the braking.
IMHO, this is a bigger improvement in ability to control the car than my upgraded rear sway bar. It's a 2-minute install, and can easily be moved to a different car without leaving any evidence. Worth every penny it costs and then some - it's even SCCA-legal for autocross.
I bought mine from Mini Mania - http://www.minimania.com/
