Western Nebraska has top twisties in Midwest?
> I am re-posting here as Colorado, etc is so close to the area featured....<
Years ago I while at a motorcycle shop here in the Dallas area I was flipping through a book which I can't recall exactly the title but the subject was the top 10 motorcycle journeys in America.
The 4th ranking road was US 83 starting in Brownsville, TX going all the way to Canada. At the top of the highlights was the Nebraska National Forest located right in the middle of the sand hills. Sounds kinda lame right?
Well it wasn't until Monday that I did some searches trying to find a great place for a road trip and camping.. What a find! The story go, back in 1903 a professor from the Univ. of Nebraska convinced Teddy Roosevelt to annex off over 100,000 acres to make a man made forest reserve to offset the harvesting of wood in the eastern states.. Today the majority of trees are 100 years old and since they have been planting continuously for over 22,000 acres.
Inside are miles of twisty roads in the forested sand hills. I have ordered a forestry map but in Microsoft Streets and trips if you zoom in close you can get an idea of what there is. Looks like just about 100 miles worth. It's now called the Worlds Largest Man Made Forest and is boarded by the Dismal river and the Middle Loup River which are fascinating for kayaking and canoeing. the Dismal is powered by natural springs as deep as 100 feet.
Any one want to join me in a trip?
The tower where the photos were taken is at the NW edge so you it's difficult to see the concentration of the trees in the main part, but the forested area is about the size of Oklahoma City. There's a lot about it on the web...

Well, I'm really looking forward to going when it's warm. Mostly to scout it out. I want to get a canoe though but will do that later. I'll have to get back with you on that. I'm going to try for March but it's more likely I won't be free until September.. It's 800 miles from here but I'm hoping to be working for myself full time by then so I could take the time off.
