I'm looking for a new set of track tires for HPDE events and would appreciate some advice. Going out on a limb a bit, I'll say I'm an "intermediate" skill level driver. This set would be for track use only.

I'm looking to fit 17x7 OZ Ultraleggera rims (37mm offset). I like the handling of the Goodrich g-Force Sports that are on there now, but as 215s they are rubbing badly on the uphills. So I'm leaning towards going back down to the stock size at 205/45-17.

Although camber plates have moderated it a bit, I still have a lot of trouble with edge chunking especially on the fronts. So this next set should either be shaved. Or outright R compounds -- driving experience wise, yes maybe I am ready for Rs.

So here are the options.

Shaved street tires. Anotehr set of G-Force sports, in 205/45 would be OK. But what about the Kuhmo MX? Looks like an excellent tire at a great price. I always liked Bridgestones on my prior track car, an E30 -- has anyone tried the Potenza RE-01's yet? Or Yokohama Parada Spec-2s?

R-Compounds. Toyo RA-1's seem to be the best choice. Pricey though at $198 and up shaved. Does TireRack even carry any R-compunds that will fit? I get lost on their site. Any other choices for R-compounds?

I know your driving skills and I would say that you are way ready for a good set of Rs. You say track only, so then go with 16s, not 17s unless you have a BBK up front. If you need to stay with 17s then the best tire for you would be the RA1s in a 205-40-17. Small dia. and super light. I would also recomend you get at least a 7.5" wide rim.
Street tires are a big waste of money on the track as they just don't last. The Rs will.
You have a few choices at Tirerack, and my first would be the brand new BF Goodrich G force R1s. Then the hoosiers, then you have choices from them like Avon Tech R and Kumho V710. All are treadless.
Just think about those wet days though. I will say that my shaved slick RA1s were better in the wet then my street Yokis. Unless of couse it deep water.
