MS-REME Highway 36/Fortuna Rub

The Mt Shasta Chapter or Redwood Empire Mini Enthusiasts are hosting a "Highway 36-Fortuna" run on Sunday July 12 which will include an overnight stay in Eureka and depart Fortuna July 13 to Red Bluff via Highway 36.

Sunday morning will stage at J's Market in Old Shasta about 9:00 am.

Plan to run 299W with a potty stop in Salyer, then hit 101 North to Trinidad for lunch at the Eatery. (Best Clam Chowder around).

There will be a wine tasting in Ferndale before evening meal, and hopefully a group Motel in Eureka.

Breakfast on Monday morning, then head East on Highway 36 to Red Bluff, for either a late lunch or early dinner.

Check the REME Calendar & RSVP there.

Update for tomorrow & Monday's Run

Sunday Morning July 12, 2009

Clutches out at 9:00am at J’s Market in Old Shasta on SR-299 west. Check the sign out front of J’s Market when you come into town.

Due to several radar speed traps on 299, we will exercise caution and keep near the speed limit. There is some roadwork on 299 over Buckhorn Summit but they will most likely have this shut down on Sunday. There maybe some dirt on the road left by this work so keep an eye out in this area.

We will depart west going through the Whiskeytown Lake National Park, up and over the twisties of Buckhorn Mountain, and re-group/break at the Lewiston turnoff for a 15 minute stop. (Point 2 on you maps). This is where Bob & Linda Wilson will join us.

We will continue on out 299, past Weaverville, Big Bar, and stopping at Salyer for a 30-minute potty stop. This is a State rest stop. (point 3 on the map)

Then its back on 299 west through Willow Creek, Blue Lake (Gas Stop at Indian Casino), then when we hit 101 we will go north to Trinidad for lunch at “The Trinidad Bay Eatery & Gallery” 607 Parker St. Trinidad, CA 707-677-3777 http://www.trinidadeatery.com/

Historic Lighthouse and photo shoot. Point 5 on the map.

After lunch and some “shopping” we will leave south through Mc Kinleyville, Alliance, Eureka, Spruce Point, King Salmon, Fields Landing, Beatrice, Loleta, Fernbridge, Port Kenyon and into Ferndale where we will stop at the Wildcat Wine Shoppe 533 Main Street, Ferndale, CA 95536. There we will enjoy some wine tasting and food pairings from the Loleta Cheese Factory. There will be a charge for the wine tasting and cheese.

Point 6 on your map.

Ellie & Randy Thompson will serve as our official “welcoming committee” to Ferndale.

At about 4:30pm we will depart north on 101 up to Eureka where will check into our hotel.

Best Western Bayshore Inn 3500 Broadway St. Eureka, CA 95503 707-268-8005
Point 7 on the map.

With plenty of restaurants & shops around, and a fully appointed hotel, we should have no trouble finding food or activities. Marie Calendar’s is “on-premise” and does serve some great pies. Beware the temperatures are expected to be in the mid 50’s by 8:00pm so dress accordingly

Monday Morning July 13, 2009:

We will depart the Best Western Bayshore Inn at 9:00am and head south on US 101.

We will stop for a BIG breakfast at the Historic Samoa Cookhouse; so don’t eat anything before we leave the hotel. (Point 2 on your run map)

Across the Samoa Bridge
Off Cookhouse Road
Samoa, California 95564
Phone: 707.442.1659

We will depart Samoa at 10:36am and head for Fortuna and SR-36. We will drive through Alton, Hydesville, Carlotta, Stafford, Bridgeville and stop at Dinsmore for a 25 minute potty break (Point 5).

At South Fork Mountain Lookout we will take another break to enjoy the views and take some photos. (Point 6 on the map)

We will then continue on to The Wildwood Store in Wildwood on highway 36 for lunch.

Located in the Shasta Trinity National Forest

28795 State Hwy 36 West, Wildwood, CA 96076

http://wildwoodstore.com/

This is the ONLY gas station on highway 36 that carries Super-Unleaded Gas.(Point 7 on the map)

After lunch we will attack the famous roller-coaster twisties of highway 36 down to Red Bluff. This is one of the favorites for motoring enthusiasts and motorcycles, and is features on many websites as “the road you have to drive”.

We will end our journey at the Riverside Bar & Grill 500 Riverside Way
Red Bluff, CA 96080-3424 (530) 528-0370 for dinner on Monday at about 4:00pm.

(Point 8 on the map)

Please bring your run maps, FRS/GMRS Radios fully charged and set for channel 7 sub-channel 21, extra water, Dramamine, Cell phone, REME nametag, REME T-Shirt, extra jacket for the coast, camera, please have a full tank of gas, and an empty bladder, and a BIG smile.

Weather looks to be great, 85F in Redding tonight, about 70F in Old Shasta at 9:00am, there is fog out at the coast in Eureka (even with a chance of rain up until 2:00pm) so we should arrive after that. The temperature will drop to a cool 61F by 5:00pm and then down to 56F by 8:00pm, partly cloudy in Eureka. On Monday the weather looks great all the way back to Red Bluff.

Cheers,

Norman Nelson
