2012 R60 Countryman S ALL4 6spd - oil on bottom of transmission
Hey all, new to the world of MINI with a recent purchase of a clean 2012 R60 ALL4 6 spd. I'm a long time Subaru owner and have had two recent, super negative experiences with the brand. I'm done! I could see the R60 was snotty on the bottom of the transmission and was hoping for something simple .. never the case. Anyway, I suspect rear main seal. Is that a typical failure with ~90k miles? Looks like a engine out task. Will do clutch kit while out but advice on what else should be done? Timing chain and water pump?
I wonder why I don't see the leaking fluid along the bell housing to engine line. Instead I see fluid along the transmission to bell housing line. Should that lead me to a transmission leak instead of engine leak? Looks like the transmission fluid is 75w-90 .. the leaking fluid appears to much lighter viscosity than that .. like engine oil ... 5w-30 ish..
After some serious disassembly I have the transmission and transfer case out. I've done extensive reading on the various failures that are common to these Countryman all4 models ... I'm still a little baffled as I don't think I have the dreaded failed transfer case. I was assuming the oil was engine oil as it didn't have the typically 75w-90 tranny oil smell and a possible failed rear main seal ... the oil leak area wasn't on the bell housing to block line so that didn't make sense. I plan to replace the clutch as part of this process so things needed to come apart anyway ...
I drained both the transmission and transfer case and the oil looked good ... no metal.
Has anyone seen a leak along the bell housing to transmission line? How hard is it to open the transmission?
