Stripped timing chain guide bolt hole
Stripped timing chain guide bolt hole
I finished my first timing chain replacement on my 2014 Countryman S last week. As I was approaching the home stretch and hitting torque on the required bolts. Got to the lower timing chain guide bolt (top right of the crank pulley). I snugged it up by hand and hit it with my torque wrench set at 23 ft-lbs (just like the other 2 new guide bolts). It just spun and spun, never got past hardly finger tight. I backed the bolt out just to see if it still kind of caught threads in that direction and inspected the bolt threads - they were in great shape, no defects, but I did find some aluminum wrapped around a few threads up by the bolt shoulder - I assume from the threads in the block. My heart stopped for a bit.
Just to see I took an old guide bolt, swapped it's o-ring for the new one and tried it. Seemed to work, but of course I was a bit scared to bring it to torque. Just gave it a good solid snug.
If this guide bolt leaks in the near future of course I have to see what I can do. If it was aluminum from the threads in the block what is the consensus on a thread repair kit (heli-coil)?
Has anyone else had this happen?
