Cracked Engine Piece

I wakes up this morning to a Mini that will suddenly not start - press the Start button, here a click from the engine, but nothing. Pop the hood and I see the below engine piece is cracked, which is the extent of my engine knowledge.

What is that silver piece? Is that my problem? How f'd am I? Thanks in advance.

Heat shield for the turbo, which looks normal to me.
That crack at the bottom left center is always there,
from where the sheet metal folds around.
Check the battery terminals for voltage and tightness
for starters (no pun intended).

When you insert your key, do you get the usual gongs and warnings? A "click" from the engine bay is usually indicative of a low battery or messed up starter.

The silver part you're showing is the heatshield over the exhaust/turbo. It being cracked isn't good, but unless there was a catastrophic mechanical failure, I doubt the crack is related to your engine not starting. You'd know it if there was a catastrophic failure of that magnitude...
**seems all the heat shields have a crappy warp right there**

What year car? R60 I presume. Original battery, miles? Probably need to get it tested. Tried a jump start? Make sure you know how to do so before attempting.

While the crack had me freaked out, turned out to be a simple dead battery just as suggested. Thanks a bunch, you saved me a towing bill.
