n18 noises

i have a 2013 cms all4 with 42k miles. i bought it a couple of months ago and the engine has always sounded like a diesel motor. i asked the question in another thread about how it could be the turbo going out, but he suggested the timing chain tensioner? does that mean the plastic arms or the tensioner (bolt looking thing ) itself. i thought this problem was figured out with this year, thats why i bought it and not an 11' or 12'

here are a few videos to illustrate...

n18 cold

n18 warm

Direct injected engines are noisy. Too me this sounds normal.

The tensioner is the bolt looking device. I believe that the plastic arms that you mention are the chain guides.

Sounds just like mine, don't think there is anything glaring wrong. Timing chain is very loud and noticeable. Many say it sounds like rocks being kicked around in the engine. If no codes, just check your fluids.

Yep mine sounds the same you can usually hear the tensioner rattle independent of the engine noise its kind of an off cadence sound. If it was the turbo you usually hear a whine or if the seals crack or burn excessive smoke. I think you are fine i thought something was a bit wrong with mine as well initially until i stood by several other countryman and heard the same loud noises.

i need to find another local cms owner and compare noises, plus maybemake a new friend!

what about the high pitch noise when i turn the car off? i can kinda hear it in the cab but more prominent when i get out of the car. i am guessing its a transmission cooler fan or power steering fan that runs for a little while after turning the car off, but its winter time so i find it odd. i dont drive very far to work and back, maybe 6 miles...

The auxiliary water pump runs for a while after shutdown to cool the turbo.

is it shocks or swaybars that helps with body roll?

N18 engine is not known to have that issue with the tensioner. just make sure you have oil and the correct weight/viscosity (5W30).

Replacing the tensioner is not as simple as unscrew and screw a new one! remember that the intake and exhaust sprockets might be under internal tension. Once you release the tension, you will throw it out of timing.

Can confirm My R60 Is "Loud Diesel sounding"

The tensioner will leave you no doubt to what it is.

The new 2017 I am driving also sounds the same to be honest they have done a much better job an insulating the cabin so its not as nosiey from the inside even with windows down. Go test drive a new one to confirm if you have a day and a MINI dealer near you.

My 2011 MCCMs (R60s) ALL4 only gets loud when the oil level is low (about a quart low), that's the only time my engine gets noisy. Top off the oil and it gets quieter, but not quiet, it pretty much sounds like the videos you posted when all the fluids are at optimum levels.

I did add oil, enough to show too much on the dipstick, and while quieter, its still pretty loud on cold starts. its just disconcerting to me, its as loud or louder than my daughter's 08 TDI.
im looking forward to modding this, but I want to make sure its close to 100% before I dive in.

my wife giggles whenever I get concerns...I don't think its funny.

my advice, find another cms owner nearby or on the forum and do a side to side comparison, that my help...

so I'm just going to have to put everything off until I can get the timing chain replaced or a code shows up. its a tad bit frustrating

Just installed M7 CAI with silicone intercooler charge pipe. Now when I start engine it makes a whooshing sound for a while then stops. It doesn't do it every time. Any ideas? Is it BOV?
