Engine clatter, poss. 'death rattle'?
Engine clatter, poss. 'death rattle'?
So my 2011 CPO ALL4 S CM has clattering rattle type noise on a cold start. It goes away after 30-60 seconds depending on the temp. So is this a normal sound of everything being cold and warming up, oil getting distributed etc? Or is this sound an indication of a problem? My SA said that if it goes away when it gets warm then I am fine but if it continues to let him know. It goes away from what I can tell.
Alas there IS *another* small rattle sound that matches the RPM of the engine and can be heard best when in 1st gear and running along at about 4k RPM. Driving by a wall it sounds like a metallic rattle/loose heat shield type of noise. Are these the same noises? Or not really?
I've attached a video that starts about 20 seconds after start up(it was too big to upload) and you can hear the chatter noise. It stops toward the end, which is at about 45-50 seconds after start up.

What do you think? Normal or should I get it looked at?
Thanks and Cheers!!

I can't tell as the sound quality is not good enough. Plus, without that first 20 seconds, it is going to be hard to tell anyway.
The timing chain problem typically sounds like a can of rocks being shaken around.
I don't think it is a good idea to ignore the problem if it is going away after it warms up. That will just lead to bigger problems as you are essentially ignoring the symptoms if it is the chain.

There have been a few threads on the engine rattle on cold start. It's probably the turbo wastegate that stays open until the engine has warmed up.
This TSB has information on the wastegate rattle on warmup.

Our Countryman started making a clattery heat shield sound for a bit. It turned out that the AC refrigerant filler tube had broken loose and was banging on a heat shield! The noise typically happened at idle until the engine warmed up.
