"P" indicator remaining illuminated. huh?

First, let me establish my street cred. Two MINI owner. An '06 "justacooper" and a '11 CM (3 weeks old). Love 'em both. Seriously, I still smile when I walk through the garage to get to my vehicle (see next two sentences). Unfortunately, my daughters drive the coupe and my wife gets the CM. I get the Yukon XL. Oh, well.

Anyways, my question. The CM is an automatic. When we turn off the car, the "P" on the base of the shifter remains illuminated. In fact, I don't think its been off since we bought the car. I've tried a bunch of random things, like: turning the car on/off with the other key fob; playing with the interior and exterior lights; etc. Nothing seems to work. I'm not terribly concerned in the short term becuase it just can't be drawing that much from the battery. Long term, I suppose I could have an issue. Mainly, its just an annoyance. Beyond that, not a single complaint. What am I missing? Thoughts?

Thanks.

Throw a leash on it and take it for a walk - preferably near some trees. It's trying to tell you something.

Seriously, maybe a minor adjustment to a switch? Any other lights staying on that you may have over looked?

Not a problem, My Clubman does the same thing. I haven't timed it, but it does eventualy turn off. Then just opening the door will turn it on again.

After the car "turns off electronically" (10+ minutes) the light will go off. No worries, it is functioning as intended.

That seems to be a trademark of BMW since the early to mid 90s

You guys nailed it. I read your responses last night and checked the car before I went to bed. No light. I slept well. Thanks so much.

it must be a common question. My MA pointed out that it would stay lit for some time then go out automatically.

This site is awesome. I haven't even gotten my MINI yet but I would have noticed this and it would have bugged me and now I know not to worry. Excellent!

I am so glad I have this site! Just got my CM this weekend and I noticed the light, checked the manual and nothing. So my next thought was to search on NAM and TADA!!! I found the answer! Awesome now I don't have to bug my MA. Ya hooo!
