Update: When I got MINI's reply that I should take it to the dealer, I said"No, Thank You. My dealer is over an hour away and I was sold on the connected with the promise that I would be able to update it myself. I would like someone with knowledge of the system to call me to discuss." I got a call today. Can't deal with it now, but I will post the results of tomorrow's discussion.
So I got a call back from Ask-Mini. Originally stating that the reason I was told to take it to the dealer was that an end user was not allowed to do any software updates. It is only something the dealer can do. I directed them to the mini.com website and sent them a picture of my Connected screen with the Update Software menu up. They said, and I'm paraphrasing, "Oh." I explained my frustrations with Connected from the beginning(again) stating with the need to buy a $250 armrest that is useless for the purpose of plugging in a phone because the additional really expensive snap-in adapter that isn't included in the cost, didn't or still doesn't exist. Ultimately, they circled me back around to my dealer. My SA called and said that owners were not allowed to do software updates, I explained again and again got, "Oh." My SA is contacting his regional boss to see what to do. It seems like MINI is disConnected on this issue. I'll update when I hear back from my SA.
interesting. I/m taking mine in for service, the ecu update (which they are already giving me a bad feeling about despite stumbling issues) and for this Connected update
Updated our 03/2012 SD All4 yesterday. Painless. Used the plug in the centre rail.
Looks like no changes to office though. Only contacts appear. I use an iP4s with snap in adapter in the armrest.
So, I get the call back from MINI. It was, "I'm sorry, I understand your frustration, you will have to take it to the dealer."
I also explained my frustration with being made to buy a $250 armrest and a $250 cradle only to have none of it work properly. They have really bungled the handling of this and I think they have put a sour enough taste in my mouth not to get another one. I love my car, but the way MINI has dealt with this has put me off so much I think I'm done.
I have a similar encounter with them. My MINI Countryman with a build date of 11/2010 has Connected and NAVI, but NO Plugin option under Connected, and NO Bluetooth audio. I ordered the car 3/2011, and they give me this "first production run" car, and that it can't have any of these things. Basically a crippled system. They made no efforts to fix this issue, even when my invoice says I should have these things.
I also have no "Software Update" menu on there. so I can't even do this update through the center rail. I think this will be my first and last MINI.
entered the Vin, downloaded the file to a Mac, then transferred it straight to a new sandisk 16GB mini usb drive. turned on the ignition on the car ( not engine), went to the settings on the screen, then software update, it said there was no software installed, then at that point I installed the usb in the center rail slot and after like 10 seconds I got the go ahead on the screen , selected to update, and it took about 1 minute, then went back to the home screen, and to settings to see the software version and indeed it was a new number for both of the car and telephone versions. No noticeable difference that I can see but will update this if I notice anything different.
I have a 2016 countryman, did the software update and still no music on my phone (ie Pandora, music library etc) through my speakers. The artwork, artist, song name is all on the screen but the music still streams through the phone. After reading the software update it seems it only supports iPhone 6. I have a 7. Could that be the problem?

I also have a 2016, I have to say the music system in this thing is such a POS for 2016 with that stupid adapter in the center console and the USB in the glovebox not able to do anything. I think I read somewhere that you can get an adapter for in the armrest to lightning connector that might work, otherwise you may have to plug your phone in with a 3.5" stereo jack into the plug between the seats. I do know that works. (For newer iPhones, you have to use the adapter to get a headphone jack. I ended up buying an old ipod and just leaving it between the seats plugged in all the time.
I gave up trying to get my 2011 audio system to work with anything other than an old MP3 player plugged into the port in the center rail. A couple of friends of mine have newer ones and they're frustrated with MINI's poorly designed audio system too. As much as I love my MINI, i wont buy another one.
So, I see now that a "Y" cable" which has a lightening end for my iPhone 7, 3.5 plug in and USB end is the solution. BMW/MINI is the only one that sells it for a whopping 100.00, with not great reviews. I understand there is a radio replacement for up to the 2015's. Guess I'll have to wait for next year to update my radio and then put a back up camera in. The plug in streamed my music through the car speakers, but does not charge. This is a good article. https://sites.google.com/site/thebat...ips-and-tricks
Do you have a part number for the adapter? Is it USB A to Lightning?
It interfaces to the 3.5 mm aux + USB ports on the MINI and goes to the Lightning port on the phone. Part # 61122408012 "Music/media adapter - BMW" Here is a partial screenshot of my order from eBay:

https://www.shopminiusa.com/PRODUCT/...CHARGING-CABLE. Turns out I have one of these left over from my 2010 Mini convertible. I just bought the adapter to convert it o lightning for 34.00 off amazon. I was able to test it out with a single cable, lightening one end and 3.5 audio plug the other end. Perfect, except it doesn't keep it charged. Will get the adapter tomorrow. The link above is a Mini accessory for 103.00 bucks. BMW also sells them and I've seen them on eBay.
Would anyone be able to share the file they downloaded because it has been quite some time now that the website page is not available. The connectivity page tells me I need to use the US specific page, but when I got there I see
