Drivetrain R60 Mod Tier List
R60 Mod Tier List
Hello all, I have owned my '13 Countryman S for about a year now. I have the ALL4 package, which has treated me well, but I'm looking to start down the rabbit hole that is modifications. I'm completely new to the car modification scene as far as actual experience goes, and while I'm handy enough to possibly do some installs on my own, I do not have the tools or facilities to do any serious upgrades. I've browsed the forums a bit and have absorbed some info, but I don't really get the whole picture just yet. I was hoping that those with experience could give me a sort of starting list for performance upgrades. It would be most beneficial if I could get a sort of step by step list. IE if you get a tune, install a, b, and c along with it. Many thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to drop some knowledge.
I was in the same boat as you when I got my R60 a few months ago. There's not an overwhelming amount of modifications or parts to choose from, like if you had a mid-90s Civic.
The relatively slim amount of part availability can be a blessing and a curse, so I think you're thinking about this the right way with a 'tiering' system.
In general, start off with getting the right tools. Whether or not you're going to be working exclusively on it or taking it to a tuner, having some Mini-specific general tools is important.

- Torx bits - get a set of interchangeable driver bits, a set of socket bits (plus extensions), and allen-style Torx wrenches. If you already have a general socket set, this is a great addition:
- Plastic Pry-tools - So.Many.Clips on every interior and bodytrim piece of plastic.
- Metallic tray - nothing worse than losing a 10mm nut down in the depths of the engine bay. This holds all the metal bits n pieces, and magnetically attaches to anything so it doesn't spill.
- OBD Code reader - Mini/BMW specific software. A little pricey, but will pay for itself many many times over when you get an airbag light, engine light, or allowing the dealer to know what is wrong before you pay for 'diagnostic charges'. Foxwell NT530 Mini/BMW
- For my mods, I went with NM parts wherever I could. NM Engineering. Intake system, turbo piping, exhaust, Power Module. Very very quality stuff, you get what you pay for. Also did Conti ExtremeContactSport tires. I'll get to their suspension parts eventually, but wanted to get a 'baseline' for a season with these mods and tires. Always room for more. Next year will probably be intercooler, downpipe, and ECU flash - and some cosmetic items. Good luck, don't stick with a budget (i know, i know) - stick with what you want for the vehicle, and save up for the right parts. I did all the mods myself in the driveway, at my own 'learning' pace. Good luck, you got this!
