Exhausts: Milltek or NM?

I have been debating between these two for some time now. The NM requires cutting the OEM pipe based on the 10min install video I watched. The Milltek looks to be no cutting required, just replacing all pipes- DP back. Hard to say for sure since there are zero pictures and only two youtube videos that only show dimly lit tailpipes.

I also found this UK site (http://milltekexhaust.pumaspeed.co.uk/) that will sell the Milltek, which is normally $1200, for $1000 with delivery, making both systems pretty much the same price.

Is there any reason to go with NM at this point? Better looking?

i went with the milltek ... my exhaust is now 2.5" throughout

between the point you cut and the DP there is a neck-down to under 2.25" in the stock pipe

here is a link to photos of my milltek

We've sold the Milltek exhaust and have to say it's really nice and fits well, can't go wrong there.

no sound clip ... my camera freaks out at the low pitch and mutes the sound way down

i again ask if anyone in the metro chicago or metro milwaukee area could record a sound clip for me?

i can tell you the pitch is lower than stock, slightly louder than stock at steady speed, quite a bit louder than stock at full throttle ... no nasty resonance at any rpm and does not sound at all like the rice-racers

the power comes on about 1,000 rpm lower than the stock exhaust

the milltek eliminates both the second cat and resonator and uses the stock hangers

Scott- thanks awesome pictures. Might be a stupid question but did it come with all mounting hardware? I noticed you took a few photos of how it mounted to the car. Or did you just reuse what the stock system had been using?

the milltek exhaust uses the stock mounting hardware at the stock locations

everything you need is included or already on your car

only advise i would give is that the clamps need to be very tight, i originally used a 3/8" drive rachet, but had to go back and retighten the clamps using a 1/2" drive rachet

NM offer two systems. One is a cat-back and the other is a DP back. I chose the cat-back system in order to save a couple hundred bucks. I have been extremely pleased with my NM system. It comes with all the necessary hardware. They provide instructions on where to cut the pipe and once that is done, installation is a breeze.

not sure they have that for the Countryman...

So I pulled the trigger and ordered a Milltek. thanks Scott, the pictures pushed me over the edge. I think I'll install it myself too.

Thanks. I missed it. I see there is no second cat. Looks good. No 2nd cat or resonator. Nice. I bet it sounds good

Scott,

I was reading Milltek's online directions and it says to use a high temp silicone sealant on all joints. Did you do this and if so did you apply between the flex pipe and the turbo down pipe? I ask because I just installed an Akrapovic DP and those directions did not say anything about using silicone and I just used the metal gasket that came with the OEM down pipe. Also I am currently getting a faint exhaust smell on start up and wonder if it's at the flex pipe-DP connection and if silicone will help...

thanks,

Ben

i did not use the sealant, i just tightened the clamps with a 1/2" drive rachet

i don't get any leakage at the joints

the flex pipe is welded into the front piece of the 4 pieces

there was a gasket on the v-band clamp and i reused it dry, no sealant

Scott,

I installed the system yesterday, which is not easy if you do not have a lift btw, and I am getting a pretty loud rattle. My guess is that one of the black cross plates in the back (not sure what they are really called) is touching the milltek pipe. I looked at your photos but it is hard to see. Do you know if they are toucing or floating above? Maybe I turned the back pipe (before the muffler) the wrong direction and the angles are wrong?

initially, i had contact on the crossbraces but not now

i have about 1/4" clearance

loosen the clamps and twist the 2 center sections to increase the clearance

also push up as you retighten the clamps ... the clamps need to be very tight ... use a 1/2" drive ratchet, not 3/8"

btw ... i did my install on jack-stands, a lift would have been faster

How much are your tips sticking out? It was a b*tch getting them on right?

the photos were taken on a lift, but i installed on jackstands

i had no trouble putting the tips on

mine stick out about 1/4" when cold and 3/4"-1" when hot ... the system grows when hot!

you installed the tips by inserting the muffler pipe into the space bewteen the inside and outside slotted end of the tip correct? My muffler pipe is either too large (doubtful) or the space on the tip is too small. I spent a good 30 minutes fighting to get them on and I think they are sticking way too far out.

slotted end of the 90 deg goes on the muffler side right? Non-slot end goes into the slotted tip?

first photo is left pipe from the side view. second photo is the right pipe from the top. And they are not even right now, but after literally 30 minutes of struggling that was best I could do (and it was 9PM at that point)

yeah very strange. I checked your photos again and confirmed that's how it's supposed to be. The OD the muffler pipe almost matched the OD of the tip pipe which is likely the problem. Oh well, email sent to Pumaspeed with questions, when the weather clears up I'll take them off and try again.
