I am the original owner of a 2014 Mini Cooper S Roadster and I just noticed the back glass on my convertible top has separated and is only attached by a small section on the bottom. Does anyone know what kind of adhesive to use to attach the glass back to the canvas? The top is still in great shape and I cannot afford a new one. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks Lori
No MINI experience but when the plastic rear window in my Boxster's soft top cracked I found a highly regarded auto upholstery/soft top shop and had a new plastic window sewn in.
Thus my advice would be to seek out a highly regarded auto upholstery/soft top shop in your area and have the car in to see what can be done and how much it will cost.
Mine [R57] isn't that bad, but I'm attempting to repair. Luckily it's just across the top edge.
Using Lexel adhesive. Prior owner successfully re-bonded a different part when it separated, so keeping with that. It's a pain of a process, and probably a lot tougher with that much separated.
I've also seen 3M 5200 as a possibility, too. But couldn't find it locally
I'm using this video as a guide, real challenge is getting it propped up on the inside, enough that you can get the pieces together, but not so much that it pushes it apart.
I had the same experience recently. I bought the cheap clamps, the primer, and the glue and did it over a couple of days. I did one section at a time with the clamps because you can't seem to do it all at once. (of course my lack of ability might have had something to do with it.) Once you push on it from the inside (with a pillow or towel or similar) be careful not to move that cushion or you'll get the black stuff (glue) on the inside which is a pain to remove and you have to be careful not to clip the defrost wires in the window when scraping it off). Also, it you do it and it leaks don't fret, find out where - put some more glue down and after letting it set, try again. It took me three tries before I was happy there were no leaks. Mines a 2012, but had been replaced once. I'm now in SC and the heat and UV finally got to it.
I gave up on rebonding the glass in my R57 & instead removed the glass & sewed in a vinyl window.
I've got it about 80% sewn in with weatherproof double-stick Gorilla Tape to bond it to the fabric. Sewing it in to ensure it doesn't eventually peel away. Light to moderate rain, it's only leaking where I haven't sewn it in at the lower corners where the tape has puckered a bit.
Looks a bit better now, as I've gotten it more sewn in, it's pulled the slack out & added a bit of tension to the vinyl.
