JCW intake

vehicle: 2014 Factory JCW R59

here is the intake:

why doesn't the intake looks like this?

(with the JCW logo)

as found here:
http://www.waymotorworks.com/jcw-int...6-r55-r57.html

is it possible for a factory JCW to NOT have a JCW air intake OR did they change this on the N18 engine 2011+

additionally it seems the hood scoop is non-functional as there is a felt liner installed.

is the is new update?

The hood scoop is not functional because it isn't needed. These cars have relatively small engine and get plenty of air without a real hood scoop.
In my opinion it's just fine like that. For one the turbo is right there and it wouldn't be a good idea to have the air intake so close to the turbo. And routing an air duck from that location would require additional space between the engine and the hood, not mentioning the stuff that would more easily clog the filter.

It's for styling and that's alright too

I don't have a logo on the air intake and I don't care much. I have the same metal badge on the engine cover.

As for the pad, I believe it came with the cold weather package.

interesting feedback.. so solutions such as:

http://www.aemintakes.com/search/pro...x?prod=21-721C
or
http://www.ddmworks.com/Mini-Cooper-...rks_p_156.html
or
https://www.m7tuning.com/m7-ram-2-sc...iberglass.html

are still for style points?

I guess after videos like this:

I can appreciate skepticism.

unanswered question:
does MINI have a JCW badge intake (with enhanced properties) for the 2011+ N18 motors or is the MINI intake that is for sale at Way Motor Works simply an order model and MINI has re-engineered the intake for the newer models?

Sure, there will always be an aftermarket opportunity some where. There's plenty of people happy to make products that fits an opportunity. And I won't even go into the the debate of whether these air intake are useful or not, especially on stock engines. I've been there and seen all kinds of conversations on the subject. It's pointless to debate enthusiasm in mods

I'm not trying to be a skeptic here. I'm just saying the factory scoop was "designed" by MINI for styling purposes only. Otherwise they would have oriented/located the turbo elsewhere.

After that if you want a cold air intake, I still believe it is most likely better to channel air from elsewhere than right above the turbo. The turbo gets really really hot and warming-up air before the intake isn't going to help.
Does the air have time to get hot as it enters... maybe not at speed, who knows by the time all these parts gets hot, but it isn't the best if what you really care is a cold air intake. In short, forcing the scoop to be useful isn't the best thing one can do.

I don't see anywhere stated as OEM Mini or Genuine in the listing. This should give you a clue if legitimate or not.

ok so the mystery of the JCW intake seems to be solved

http://new.minimania.com/part/G2NME4...-R57-2007-2010

and this post:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ifference.html

so it looks like on the N14 engine and the JCW for an intake it used a cone style filter. Fast forward to the N18 engine and it seems this cone filter JCW intake is not an option. That no factory option doesnt stop creative people from buying the older N14 intake and retrofitting onto the N18 engine.

the items I linked to in the original post:
http://www.waymotorworks.com/jcw-int...6-r55-r57.html

IS an OEM part, as verified in the new link in this post:
http://new.minimania.com/part/G2NME4...-R57-2007-2010

however as the part fitment indicates this is NOT (easily a direct fit) a solution for 2014 MINI.
To make the item work an owner would need the N14 JCW intake AND the bottom of a non JCW N14 intake.

---- -

the hood liner question - not sure I am sold on "cold weather package" as this vehicle is a native AZ car so that perplexing item is still on the table for discussion.

Yes, the fJCW did not come with the JCW intake. They all came with the "S" intake. The JCW intake you are referring to is part of the JCW "Stage 1" Tuning kit. The intake box is slightly bigger than normal and has the JCW logo on top. On the N14 tuning kit, it has the cone filter. On the N18 kit, they changed it a high flow panel filter (similar to K&N).
However, the cone filter is the more desirable one to have. It does take a bit more work to fit the N14 JCW intake onto the N18 though. I did the conversion. Way did too. Is it worth the extra work and $$? Maybe, if you ran out of other things to do. The difference is minimal vs stock. It does give you a bit more turbo noise, but nowhere near the sound of an open intake (NM intake). If you just want to increase flow, just get a panel filter from AFE or K&N and call it a day.
