Just bought my first Mini Cooper S Coupe and when I got it home I noticed the hood scoop is not functional. I thought I read that it was in a S. Any info would be appreciated.
you're new .... GEN1 = the first MINI body style and the scoop actually feeds the intercooler .... 2002 thru 2006 <for the hard top> 2007 begins GEN2 ... the body and MOTOR changes ... that scoop is just an ornament
You can get open grilles from a couple of vendors that may possibly help keep the scoop from warping due to underbonnet heat, but usually it's non functional as said above.
All the above are correct, from a certain point of view. It all depends on your definition of "Functional". The Gen 2 scoop is functional, in that it allows some air flow into the engine bay. However, it is non-functional compared to the 1st Gen cars, in which the scoop directly supplied airflow to the intercooler.
If you want a truly non-functional scoop, go check out the 3rd Gen cars... That scoop doesn't even feed air to the engine bay, and the hood is even solid under it!
my GEN2 scoop inserts have had a couple of tiny holes in them ..... not much air flow thru that to be considered functional. When Spousal unit gets home with her R59 I'll take a picture to explain the point ...
In my 2002 the scoop was 'open' and actually the dealer recommended putting in a screen to prevent debris from getting into the intercooler coils. (I was a very early buyer .... what Navy folks would call a 'plankowner')

update: scoop insert on our R59 S is about 50% open (cut out sections)
I took the grill out of the scoop on my R55. I was all ready to make a metal screen replacement but I thought it looked good without anything in the hole. It's been a few years since I did that and I haven't seen any increase of dirt or bugs on the engine.
Thanks for the link. I didn't notice that it had 2 sources for fresh air the first time I looked at it. I find that interesting. It seems the problem with most of this type of fresh air induction is the loss of torque at take off. The duel feed may reduce or eliminate that problem.
No, can't say that I did honestly. I've seen some posts regarding torque and a CAI, but doesn't make sense to me.
I bought another CAI for my CMS, just didn't see the sense on using only a portion of the DDMWorks RIS.
I have an AEM intake with the hood scoop duct, and I saw no loss of torque when installed.
I've seen torque loss comments on the forum, too, and most of those comments came from N14 engine owners after installing one of the open style intake kits. I am of the belief that the N14 engine cars are more sensitive to intake torque loss than are the N18 engine cars.
I drilled about another 20 holes in mine It is open, and there still is some structure left. Just taped up all my paint. But I guess I could have taken it all the way out too
