R58 Bicycle carrier on Coupe?
Bicycle carrier on Coupe?
Happy Easter All! Have any of your carried bicycles on your Coupe? what bike carriers are you using? The Coupe doesnt' seem to be bike rack/cargo carrier friendly?
This must be a substantial challenge with serious modifications to the rear bumper.
No carrier for the top and on the rear only thing i could think of is MINI FINI type of hitch set up. You cannot put something on the hatch , trunk universal as the wing moves.

Roof rack for coupe
I bought a roof rack from Seasucker that works very well. It consists of two vacuum cups, one of which has a bolt for the front fork. It's nerve wracking to imagine your expensive bike flying off the roof, but it hasn't happened yet.....
check it out.....

Over in the R59 section there is a good thread on hitch racks.
Here is my first post in the thread detailing my experience; there are several followups.

The entire thread has good information. T.G. went the Curt/MiniDoMore route, I went the MiniFini route.
I use my rack several times a week.

Here U go. Only issue is the curvature of the roof and will it clear your main sprocket when front for attached.

As DonGood Mentioned I was looking into bicycle rack as well, and I have to get back to this project soon if life can give me a break with all the other things
Last summer I started to work on this:

But got derailed by a road trip last summer which turned out to call for this:

So maybe this year I can get this rack done!?

The rack looks great ,Can a get the information on the hitch that you have installed on your car ,I have a 2012 and it seems difficult to come up with the correct hitch ,not sure why they all look alike .any info will be appreciated and hurry with the rack I need one of those also .Thanks
Both require you to remove the bumper to install, and to cut holes in the bumper.
The 1Up bike rack can only be purchased from www.1upusa.com.
If all you want is a rock steady bike carrier that is easy to use and to remove, then I recommend the Curt/MiniDoMore hitch coupled with the 1Up bike rack.
The Curt hitch is flush with the bumper, meaning you would have to reach under and up to insert the hitch pin.
But the 1Up rack does not use a hitch pin. Instead it uses an expander bolt that expands inside the hitch, locking it in place. Make sure to also order the optional spacer to keep from inserting the 1Up to far and scratching your bumper.
The link above also has all sorts of pictures so you can see how it all works.
I purchased a receiver hitch from Torklift Central, (Torkliftcentral.com) 253-854-1832 ,and a Yakima Two Timer Rack. The hitch mounts to the subframe , no bumper cover removal ,works with Cooper S. Coupe , and JCW version also and others, it is invisible without the rack . No straps to rub on paint easy removal of rack when not in use .I am extremely happy with it , go to the website and check out the video ..

Closeness
I have not had any hint of vibration or rattle .The pictures angle makes it appear closer ,there is a strong 1/4 inch around. I have been extremely happy with this set up. Easy on and off , and the Yakima Two Timer Bike Rack comes with a lockable threaded hitch pin..Not cheap but I think its the best , no holes cut in your bumper cover .No Bumper cover removal for install , Takes less than an hour to install with standard tools . Capable of towing small trailer also ..Check out their website ,they have a video of the installation on a Mini Cooper S. , My wife Mini pictured is a 2012 Mini Cooper S, Coupe, R58
Nice setup. When people ask I will have to mention this hitch.
The torque central hitch was not available when I installed mine, otherwise I probably would have gone this route.
I prefer the 1Up rack. But that's around $300 for a single bike rack. Add another $250 for a 2nd bike.
