2013 JCW Coupe Discussions

Hello,

Since this is upon us (those who will be ordering in a few weeks), maybe we can start a thread on differences in engine, options, standards of the 2013 Coupe JCW vs. the 2012 Coupe JCW.

I will be ordering mine in a few weeks and will be on for the September production.

Hope to hear from you guys.

Is '13 the year the JCW Coupe is getting a different engine?

Didn't I read the aero kit, specifically the front bumper fascia, will be modified?

Edit: Configurator shows a 208 hp engine, pretty sure that's the same as the 2012 JCW Coupes so do not believe it's a new motor for this year.
Also shows only the standard 6-speed manual tranny. Wasn't the auto supposed to come out in 2013 ? Is the configurator actually
updated with the 2013 info ?

Don't quote me on this, but I think the JCW engine is getting refreshed mid-year 2013. Anyone care to either corroborate that or correct me?

Very well could be correct. Imagine that's when the auto tranny will be available too.

Geez, probably looking at a late '13 build and I don't relish the idea of having a MINI with a new engine. Second year would be much better, IMO.

Here's what I have found and I was under the impression that the 2013 model will include the new engine from the start, but if that's not accurate I'll be happy (and probably a little less nervous) if it still has 2012 engine!

MINI Coupe 2013
John Cooper Works $32,050

2012 was $31,900

The Bluetooth as standard replaces the previous Sirius Satellite Radio, which will now be an option for $250 but includes a one-year subscription to the radio service. The Technology package will now include Sirius, Comfort Access, MINI Connected, and an integrated iPhone adapter in the center armrest.

info on the new engine

MINI Corporate Communications
Press release
18 May 2012

A 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 6.4 seconds (automatic: 6.6 sec)
makes the MINI John Cooper Works Coupe the fasting-accelerating
of these elite athletes, and it also boasts a top speed of
240 km/h / 149 mph (238 km/h / 148 mph). This outstanding
sporting potency belies average fuel consumption of 6.6 litres per
100 kilometres / 42.8 mpg-----I have heard some discussion about this figure being less in actual US measurement and that they were posting Imperial mpg or something like that...

the standard-fitted sports steering wheel now features
a John Cooper Works logo in the lower section of the centre spoke.

The technical make-up of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine – which
sports a John Cooper Works logo on its cover – has a direct link
to the development of race-trim engines and has been honed
exclusively for the John Cooper Works models. Its cylinder block
and bearing mounts are made from aluminium and join forces with
reinforced pistons, a particularly high-strength cylinder head
and low-weight crankshafts. The exhaust valves are sodium-filled
to help provide the extra cooling required by a turbocharged engine,
and the intake camshaft features infinite phase adjustment.

The turbocharger, meanwhile, develops even greater charge
pressure than the engine in the MINI Cooper S Coupe. The likewise
bespoke exhaust system can be identified from the outside by its
polished stainless steel twin tailpipes.

The engine produces its maximum output of 155 kW/211 hp at
6,000 rpm, while peak torque of 260 Newton metres (192 lb-ft) is on
tap between 1,850 and 5,600 rpm. The overboost function allows
this figure to be raised to 280 Newton metres (207 lb-ft) for a short
time between 2,000 and 5,200 rpm.

The new engine links up as standard with a six-speed manual
gearbox tuned to suit its performance characteristics. However, the
John Cooper Works models can now also be ordered as an option
with a six-speed automatic gearbox with Steptronic function. The
automatic also allows the driver to change gear manually using either
the selector lever or the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

In addition to the improvements made to the engine’s efficiency,
the more extensive use of fuel consumption and emissions-reducing
technology makes the John Cooper Works models more credible
ambassadors than ever for the principle of MINIMALISM. Only rarely
will the unparalleled driving fun need to be interrupted to refuel,
thanks to technology such as Brake Energy Regeneration, which
concentrates power generation for the in-vehicle network during
periods under braking and on the overrun. Working in tandem with
the manual gearbox, the Auto Start/Stop function switches the
engine off automatically when the car stops at junctions and in traffic
tailbacks, while the Shift Point Display advises the driver of the most
efficiency-enhancing moment to change gear. The electric power
steering also does its bit to reduce fuel consumption, its electric
motor only using energy when power assistance is actually needed.

That's what I thought... thanks for the confirmation and that article on the new JCW. Wow, thought I might order later this model year but now I'm thinking wait until the '14s are being produced. Just never like getting a vehicle with a major change that year.

Shouldn't the new engine show up in the first 2013 models otherwise why would the production of JCW Coupe orders be on hold from June until Sept.?

You'd think, right? Guessing there were production delays for the company manufacturing some of the components for the new motor.

Afaik the new JCW engine is just finally based on the N18 engine that the 2012 S coupe/hardtop/roadster have. The 2012 JCW's used the same older engine as the 2010 JCW's. Motoringfile has all the specifics...

Ahhhhhh... cool. And unless I was imagining things, I read recently that the carbon buildup problem in the intakes was corrected in the '12 N18 engine.

All systems point to "go".

Not to change the subject, but could you please point me as to where you read this!
There is an entire thread on whether the N18's require an OCC to help prevent carbon build up or not

I have a 2012 Coupe S and have been dying to know this

I'll try to find it later today. Was here on this board. Given the number of threads on the subject... can't promise I'll find it again.

I think the N18 will be on all 2013 JCW cars. And the AT as an option. Those are the 2 major differences. The HP/specs are the same more or less, but MPG is supposedly like 10% better.

Yyyyyep! By the time I'm ready to order, there will be such a backlog that I'll have a 10-12 month wait, I bet.

I was going to but couldn't justify the price. I am sure someone here has the Recaros. Good luck!

I did!

From what my MA was telling me it might arrive at the end of Oct. or early Nov.
That is, unless that delay doesn't push it back farther that what his dealer order allotment was telling him.

Still, I can't wait!
It'll be nice when the "visions" I have of seeing my car appear before me are, in fact, a reality.

I hope you order yours soon CR&PW&JB! I can hear it calling out to you!

Have you locked down what colors and options you want?

I guess the rumors of the delay in production for 2013 JCWs are not true then !

Saw your build in the stickied thread... will be a real looker !!

I plan to order in about four months. Fingers crossed that things fall into place for me by then. And very heavily leaning toward White Silver with a Chile Red roof, stripes, and mirrors. Pure Hotness !! Won't need too many options on the JCW. Probably just going to add auto climate control, xenon headlights, white turn signals, rear fog, chrome line interior, the black star bullet wheels.
