Side rear window rattle fix.

The rattle was driving me up a wall. At first I thought it was coming from the boot vanity lids. However, I finally zeroed in on the smooth plastic ledge below the little side rear window. It has a lip hanging over the patterned plastic below and runs from near the door jam almost to the rear window. There is a crack in between. When I hit rough bumps I guessed that the two pieces of plastic were hitting together causing the rattle. Temporarily I slid stacks of five 3x5 cards all along the crack and voila.....no more rattle. At the dealership the entire plastic window surround was removed and black foam backed tape was inserted to prevent the plastic pieces from touching....as a permanent fix. Driving is much more relaxing now for sure. I hope this will help anyone who may run into the same issue.

That was the same rattle I had. They said a few clips were missing to hold the plastic pieces apart so they didn't hit each other.

I had this fixed about 3 weeks ago. So much better!

Yahoo! I'm going up to the dealer next week for this exact issue! Thanks Herby!

And I plan to take some pics tomorrow of my rear deck velcro fix.

PezRadar.....my dealership claims to have no knowledge of clips that are used for this issue. Do they go completely around the plastic window piece? Can you tell me how to get in touch with the service department at your dealership so I can get more info?
Artguy.....how did you make out with your dealership? Did they knowanything about the clips?

Probably because they weren't ever there. Maybe Pez's car had some and some were missing..

Hi Herbie, Just had my rattle fixed this week at Mini Fairfield County, Darien CT (Service: (877) 374-3202). Not sure what they did but it's fixed; I took a print-out of your message + Pezradar's message - that seemed to be enough for them to take care of the problem.
Maybe your service can call their service...

I've been suddenly swamped here at school, so I had to cancel my appointment for the fix. Plus the Service Manager told me they had their first on e in for the problem, so he thought I might want to wait until they had it down.

(And he didn't want me to be a guinea pig!)

Mine seems to occur only when it gets a little warmer - which here in Massachusetts has been every day for the last month. It hash;t dipped below 50 or so, which means it is making the noise almost constantly. arghh!

Herby - Give a call to MINI of Plano Service - They are the ones that did it for me.

This rattle is coming from the rear? I got a rattle, but it sounds like its coming from the front passenger side so Im not sure its the same rattle. You can hear it best on a rough textured highway.

I had a rattle but it turned out to be the passenger seat belt buckle against the inside.

The seat belt rattle happened to me a couple of times. Now I keep it stretched over the outside of the passenger seat when it's not in use.

MY RATTLE IS FIXED....GONE!! But it wasn't the side rear window. I was rear-ended on Oct. 25 and had to have the rear bumper replaced. I have taken the car to the dealership several times and to the auto body shop to have it checked out, but no one could find anything loose. I had ordered retaining clips for the side rear window (thanks to PezRadar for help with that) and when they went to put them in they found there were clips already in place. Today I went for another ride with the Mini mechanic I have used for nine years. It occurred to him that there are tension adjustments on the hatch....four of them. He increased the tension, we drove off on a bumpy street and not a sound. The accident must have jarred the hatch loose. What a relief! It has really been driving me nuts. In all fairness to the service department my coupe is the first they have dealt with and there is a learning curve for them, but without my persistence I'd still be the owner of an awful rattle that was annoying me to no end. So, after more than two months of this nonsense I can fully enjoy my Coupe once again. Yessss!

great news!

I STILL haven't had a chance to bring mine in for the rattle. Now that I see this, I am going to see if that might be the cure for me as well! We're talking the 4 round rubber stopper doodads on the hatch interior - right??

Hope your rattle issue, whatever it turns out be.....is settled soon. Ridding myself of the distraction is BIG for me. You've got the right doodads. It's a do-it-yourself fix.

I'm getting no rear rattle much.. But I tend to get one toward the front window (Not driver side.. the actual front windshield)

Anyone else getting this?
