When did you replace rear struts?

I am an original owner of an 09 Cabrio 6 speed with 31k miles. It has developed an annoying squeak on the rear passenger side. My mechanic thinks the rear strut mount has gone bad, but that is a guess on his part. The car has never been off payment or on a track, and I am a fairly conservative driver. Does it make sense that the strut mount would have failed already?

Rubber bits get hard with age, regardless how many miles or how the car has been driven. If you are fairly mechanical, you can remove the rear shocks and replace the bushings pretty easily.

Just changed out my rear struts and mounts, plus the rubber bushings on the antiroll bar. My car is now unnervingly quiet at the back, I'm not used to that and should have done it sooner! It wasn't a very hard or particularly expensive DIY job, although I treated myself to the powerflex strut mount bushings which were more spendy than others.
