Burning plastic smell from intake manifold, and won't start...
Looking for some help with next steps in diagnosis... Here's where we're at...
My 15 year old and I were looking for a summer project so we picked up a 2010 Mini Cooper S, manual transmission convertible from Copart. It was a donated vehicle and was listed as "run and drive", but when we went to pick it up the valve cover was off and it looked liked someone had started working on it, but never finished. We towed it home and put everything back together, changed the oil, and tried to start it up... The vacuum pump was seized and the intake camshaft sprocket bolt sheered off... the timing chain and the oil pump chain got torn to shreds as did the timing chain guides
We were looking for a project car, and that's what we got!
So far we've...
1. Replaced the vacuum pump
2. Dropped the oil pan and cleared out all of the fragments of chain and plastic out of the crankshaft and oil pump
3. Replaced the oil pump chain
4. Installed a new crankshaft seal
5. Installed a new oil pan seal
6. Installed a new timing chain assembly
7. Replaced battery
8. Replaced spark plugs
We just finished putting it all back together today and went to start it up. The starter works great, and everything appears to be turning over, but it won't start. So I assume it's either not getting gas or not getting spark.
I was going to pull one of the plugs and put it in the coil and see if it was generating a spark at the end of the spark plug, but we noticed some smoke coming off the back side of the engine... it smelled like burning plastic and it was appearing all along the intake manifold. Any thoughts on what might be causing the smoke and smell? We looked everywhere and couldn't see anything smoldering, but there was definitely thin wisps of smoke coming from the back side of the engine and it smelled like plastic not oil.
Thanks
Troy
