Burning plastic smell
It is possible that all the cosmoline was not cleaned up from under the hood and if it drips on the turbo it will smell. See if you can pinpoint where the smell is coming from and look under your hood for signs of dripping. Look on the underside of your hood to see if you can spot anything.
I've had that type of smell on a few new cars. It dissipates after a while. Could very well be some of the cosmoline burning off.
Or it could be the hood scoop melting. Just kidding....

check your fluids make sure the caps are nice and snug cuz if not maybe they got loose and the fluids bubbled up and leaked out and are now burning ....( happened to me with break fluid , hyrdrolic engine mount fluid , and engine coolant lol )
Funny you say that. After spending so much time here looking at the S issues I am just waiting for my scoop to melt or the cold start chatter to pop up. At least my sunroof is quiet.

melted after 10months.
The smell seems to be comming from the tail pipe. I don't smell it much if at all when I open the hood but if I sniff the tail pipe area(with the car off) I smell it. I guess I will stop by the dealer on the way home from work on saturday and ask them.
it's normal. all my other cars did the same. it take a thousand miles or so for the exhaust to bake in and burn off whatever oil, etc that was used in manufacturing.
Thanks guys I like the idea of calling it the "out side new car smell" I just don't remember it with the Justa Clubman we have. I shall keep positive thougts in my head. my hood will not melt... my engine will not rattle...my hood will not melt...my engine will not rattle...
You probably didn't smell it in your clubman because the non-s engine doesn't get nearly as hot as the S engine does.
Regarding the hood scoop and engine rattle: My hood scoop melted after about 4k miles. Replaced it under warranty, and used a dremel to cut out the extra holes. Almost 10k miles later, and it's been fine.
I hear the engine rattle I guess. It's not bad, and goes away very shortly after setting off.. Don't worry about it, and enjoy your car!

You know, I actually caught the same smell coming from a brand new Honda Fit the other day, too.
And Ahendy is probably right. That N/A engine isn't going to get near as hot under the hood. Don't worry about it, anymore!

Not to hijack my own thread but I looked at my scoop and there are a few holes cut out. Do you think I should go and cut the rest out now or just wait an see. Im sure I could look around but it the issue a bad batch of scoops are just that the plastic is not up to the temps of the turbo?
It's a combination of high temps from the turbo and the hood scoop material. I would suppose you COULD take preventative measures by cutting holes to keep it cooler, but I wouldn't risk it as it's covered under warranty. There are much better options. Most dealers will let you swap the stock hood scoop for the JCW carbon fiber scoop +the difference if your scoop melts. Another solution (and it's probably the best solution out there) is to order a turbo heat shield from M7.
Sorry to hijack the question.
Yup...mine was a plastic bag as well. I couldn't believe it. I had to get super low to the ground to see it. Good thing it was yellow. I spoke with the Service Advisors at MINI of Manhattan and they said to take off the excess and let the rest (that is already burned to the underside) burn off.
