Check Engine Light

I have a check engine light just after the gas cap icon showed several times. I filled up and snapped the cap on but it is still on. I called the dealer and they told me to get a new gas cap, fill up and in 2 weeks or so it should go off. Does anyone have any other advice? The dealer is 2+ hours away so not convenient to visit...and I am fairly sure it probably is the gas cap. How long should it take before the light goes out?

2 weeks? That's a long time for a fault to correct itself. How is your MINI running? Are you still under warranty and can you get an new one from the dealer for free? Either way, I would make the trip to get one. Or, if it is not convenient, as long as the car is running OK, I would just go ahead and drive.

The car is running fine...with no problems. I did purchase a new gas cap. The dealer is in Charleston and I am near Wilmington...about 2+ hours away....hoping the light goes off soon
